Spencer Dinwiddie is trying his best to be the secondary star that the Dallas Mavericks need. He is having one of his best 3-point shooting seasons and has been a great addition to the team ever since the Mavericks traded for him in February 2022. He has stepped up for Dallas in the wake of Jalen Brunson’s departure, but it hasn’t been enough to keep the Mavs competitive among the best.

Recently, a street artist made a mural that has Luka Doncic holding a sign and saying ‘send help’. Mark Cuban called the sign disrespectful and the artist later removed it, at the behest of Doncic himself. Dinwiddie has commented on everyone saying Luka needs more help, something that’s become more evident after the Mavericks’ loss to the Atlanta Hawks.

“The 5’4″ dude sitting on his couch saying I’m a bum or whatever. Listen, I want you to be a fan, I want you to buy the jerseys and all that stuff. But listen bruh, I have averaged 20 points a game before. This isn’t gonna faze me. Luka is far and away our superstar and we have other guys who are good players but because there isn’t another superstar, it’s gonna be pitted, the light’s not going to be shown, it’s not gonna be apples to apples. It’s Luka and the boys. You gotta be mentally tough and built for that off the court because on the court, he’s gonna make it easier for you.”

Dinwiddie is averaging 16.7 points, 5.3 assists, and 3.0 rebounds while shooting 40.5% from 3. He’s been serviceable, but he isn’t enough to make the Mavs contenders alongside Doncic.

What Can The Dallas Mavericks Do?

The Mavericks have been one of the most active names in trade rumors, having inquired about multiple players around the league. They were one of the leaders in a possible Zach LaVine trade and have recently been linked to Bojan Bogdanovic and Cam Reddish.

Making big moves this season is risky as the Mavs don’t have control over their pick in 2023 and their future pick flexibility is reliant on when that pick conveys to the New York Knicks. If the Mavs make the playoffs, they won’t be able to trigger the top-10 protection on their 2023 pick and have a clear future outlook, which can aid them in going all-in over the summer.

As far as the trade deadline goes, the Mavs need to hope they can find bargain deals around the league that helps them protect their first-round asset pool.
