With Julius Randle, RJ Barrett, Jalen Brunson, and Mitchell Robinson, the New York Knicks have a solid core of players that have held their own in the East this season.
With a 25-20 record, the Knicks are 6th in the standings and are shaping up to be a formidable playoff opponent.
Unfortunately, not everyone is bought in on the Knicks as a powerhouse. TNT’s Charles Barkley, for example, recently trolled the Knicks and their fans after Kenny Smith stated they were only one piece away from being elite.
Kenny: “[The Knicks] are probably another piece away from trying to be an elite team.”
Chuck: “LeBron, Giannis, KD. … Kareem, Wilt, Magic, Bird? The Knicks are a good little solid team, they play hard and that’s it. They’re not even close Kenny…”
The Knicks have stretches where they look near unstoppable, but they always seem to follow it up with stretches of poor defense, poor effort, and ill-advised mistakes. That lack of consistency has been the story for them for years now and the front office has not responded appropriately.
Will The Knicks Make A Move Ahead Of The Trade Deadline?
The Knicks have been rumored to be major buyers at the deadline, but it remains to be seen if they are ready to make any significant trades. At the very least, we know a Julius Randle trade is off the table.
“Prior to the draft last year I think there was more than cursory conversations about a deal involving Randle, but, ultimately, there was no buy-in at the top of the Knicks organization to pull the trigger on that deal and that’s why I’ve said since then…I don’t see a deal where the Knicks would just get off of Julius Randle…It’s not going to be some salary dump and I think that people in touch with the Knicks even recently are under the impression that the people at the top of the front office–Leon Rose, Williams Wesley, Brock Aller, Scott Perry, the whole group–I don’t think there’s any desire to trade Julius Randle.”
Without trading Randle or Brunson, the Knicks are going to be limited in who they can get, but there is a sense that they can still get better if they find the right deal.
Either way, the Knicks are unlikely to win with the roster they have now. If a Championship is truly their goal, the Knicks have to keep building up the roster until the results speak for themselves.
