The current NBA is as deep as the league has ever been in terms of top-tier talent. The MVP race is an excellent example of this. Nikola Jokic, Jayson Tatum, Luka Doncic, and Giannis Antetokounmpo all have solid cases to be considered favorites for the award, and other stars are waiting in the wings as well.
With the way the rules have changed over the years, the NBA has become an offensive showcase. Team defense has improved over the years, but the spacing and skill-oriented basketball of modern times has led to superstars regularly putting up monster numbers. The likes of Stephen Curry, Kevin Durant, and Luka Doncic can put up 30 with ease, but they all have their unique ways of doing it.
JJ Redick’s podcast, ‘The Old Man and The Three’ has been a space for some high-IQ discussions about basketball. He has had all the aforementioned superstars on and spoken about the secrets of their game with them. His channel recently uploaded a video compilation of these stars discussing how they dominate so thoroughly.
Kevin Durant, Stephen Curry, And Luka Doncic All Have Their Ways Of Scoring At The Highest Level
Kevin Durant is considered an unstoppable force, and so coaches sell out to try and stop him when he gets going on offense. He elaborated on that a little in conversation with JJ Redick.
(starts at 10:09 minutes)
“15-16 free throws, wide open three-pointers, I’m not getting those looks. So, shooting over two people it’s hard to do. I gotta play with adjustments with the opposing coach in-game. They make adjustments on me.”
Durant was asked about why he rarely ever scores massive numbers, and his response about dealing with adjustments shows just how much he is dominating on the fly. Luka Doncic is another player that’s no stranger to double teams, and he explained what he sees as well.
“You gonna make me tell all my secrets. You know what’s the first thing I look, is who’s under the basket? If it’s a big or it’s a small. Then I look if he’s already been in the paint, so he gotta get out. Or if he’s outside and he gotta come in. I think those are the first two things I look. And then I just look how the defense is playing me.”
And the third player who also spoke about getting into the zone and dominating is none other than Stephen Curry. Curry is one of a kind, and his skill set is among the best in the league.
“There’s a level of obsession about the details. When it comes to footwork, when it comes to balance, how the ball is entering the rim, there’s a legit obsession around that… Being creative about how I can play, visualizing stuff that I’ve never done before and then trying it in a skill session. The confidence that comes with that is intoxicating. And then you get into a game and kind of lose yourself in that.”
It’s clear to see that while all these stars dominate at a very high level, they all have different processes of how they go about it. At the end of the day, there’s a lot to be said about how any player can be at their best in the league, and these takes from the current best are certainly enlightening on that front.
