Los Angeles Lakers Future Draft Pick Situation Until 2029 Should Worry Their Fans

The Los Angeles Lakers don't have much control over their franchise draft picks in the coming years, making the future look bleak.

The Los Angeles Lakers are not in the best spot right now. The team is relatively maxed out in terms of what they’re doing with the pieces they have. Regardless, they’re hoping to make the most of their assets and acquire the talent to help bring another championship to LA.

For the last 2 seasons, we haven’t seen the Lakers use their assets well at all, with fans sending a lot of hate toward Jeanie Buss and Rob Pelinka for their incompetence so far. Looking at the Lakers’ future draft pick situation and how they can improve this roster, the news just doesn’t seem good.

While it may seem like the Lakers have most of their picks, they can’t be traded due to the various protections on picks up until 2025. After that, the Lakers can only trade away 2 out of the 4 picks from 2026 to 2029 due to the Stepien Rule. Truly seems like a case of waste management.

What Can The Lakers Do To Improve Their Draft Assets?

Most teams move players to get assets, but there’s no player on the Lakers outside Anthony Davis who could be traded in a package to bring picks back to the franchise. They need to compete atop the West while also managing assets, which is not easy. Despite that, Pelinka has actively made it harder on himself.

The only saving grace is that it makes sense why the Lakers haven’t made a move with their current pick situation. However, trying to manage assets while you have an in-form LeBron James and Anthony Davis is a horrible judgment call. The only way to get assets for the Lakers is to wait every year because they won’t be trading their stars nor will they support them with the help they need.
