Carmelo Anthony is one of the greatest scorers we have seen in the NBA in the last two decades. He ranks 9th all-time for points with 22,643 and is a former scoring champ, who averages 22.5 PPG for his career.

As the years have gone by, Carmelo is clearly not the player he once was but he still manages to find ways to be effective on the court. He averaged 13.3 PPG while shooting 44.1% from the field last season for the Los Angeles Lakers, which should have been enough for some team to take a chance on him for 2022-23 but no one has so far. Melo was asked about his future in the NBA when he was at his son’s high school game and he says he’s keeping himself ready in case a chance does come his way.

(starts at 2:16 mark):

“I love the game, I will say that, but I realize there’s a lot of things that’s not in my control. So, I just sit back and let it play out and whatever it’s going to be, it’s going to be and I accept that. I’m at peace with that, I’m cool and I get to watch my son play, train him, be around him… I can be that father and the man that I need to be so, I’m cool. I would love to play, I love the game, I’m still in the gym every single day. But, the opportunity presents itself, (then) it presents itself but it’s not something that I’m pressing about. I still love it, I still love the game.”

He clearly wants to get back on the court, but seems to have made peace with the fact that it isn’t in his control. All he can do is stay in shape and hope that the phone rings in the coming months. LeBron James was also at the game, as their kids were facing off 20 years after their fathers played against each other. Melo would be happy to see LeBron still going strong in the NBA but a part of him would be a bit upset that he doesn’t have it in him anymore.

There Isn’t Much Interest In Carmelo Anthony Around The League

The biggest issue with Melo on the court right now is that he is pretty much a liability on defense and his offense no longer makes up for it. His issues on defense are a big reason why the New York Knicks aren’t interested in signing him and a lot of other teams would have the same concerns.

It isn’t something he can get better at, at this stage of his career, which makes you believe that the end is here. It would be a sad way to go out but Melo can be proud of all that he has achieved so far.

His passion for the sport was ignited after witnessing the high-octane offense of the Steve Nash-led Phoenix Suns. Among the Suns, Shawn Marion stood out to Gautam as an all-time underrated NBA player. Marion’s versatility as a defender and his rebounding prowess, despite being just 6’7”, impressed Gautam immensely. He admired Marion’s finishing ability at the rim and his shooting, despite an unconventional jump shot, believing that Marion’s skill set would have been even more appreciated in today’s NBA.This transformative experience not only deepened his love for basketball but also shaped his approach to sports writing, enabling him to connect with readers through vivid storytelling and insightful analysis.
