The NBA All-Star Weekend saw a lot of takes being fired from NBA players across generations. One of those takes came from Draymond Green, who referred to the modern game as ‘boring.’ This upset legend Oscar Robertson, who slammed Green’s comments by mocking him for essentially being a worse offensive option than Stephen Curry.
Draymond has finally responded to Robertson’s comments on the latest episode of ‘The Draymond Green Show with Baron Davis,’ making it clear he respects Robertson before trashing his take and the ‘passing to Curry’ comment.
“I thought those comments were very interesting. The Big O is 86 years old, so if you think I’m going to come on here and disrespect because there was disrespect thrown, that ain’t how I roll. I’m never going to disrespect one of the pioneers of the game because he shared a bad opinion.”
“We want to enjoy the last years we have with our pioneers, the time we do have left with them, we’re going to enjoy that. I’m going to enjoy these last years.”
“When we start talking about knowing the game and how you think the game, I’m not sure what idiot wouldn’t want to pass Steph Curry the ball when he’s the greatest shooter of all time. I don’t really take that personally. Certain games I’m going to look for him even more than you’re accustomed to me looking for him, because why wouldn’t I?”
“For a guy who averaged 11 assists [per game], you were also passing the ball. You cannot quite average 11 assists and not pass the ball. In the year that Big O won a championship when he was starting to age, you were passing the ball to Kareem Abdul-Jabbar himself. Not quite sure where the dig comes from.”
Green had to take a parting shot at Robertson’s quote, claiming the legendary point guard isn’t even watching games because he’s too old to be awake during NBA games.
“Quite honestly, at 86, I’m pretty sure Big O ain’t watching many of our games. Big O [is] sound asleep by the time we play at night. He’s sound asleep. There’s zero percent chance Big O is up watching the Dubs.”
This is a measured response by Draymond who trashed Robertson in the best way he could while remaining respectful to the living legend.
Green is right to have responded the way he did because criticizing him for passing the ball to Curry was always a bad take. His role on offense is to enhance Curry while he runs the team defensively, so his on-court value is much greater than just someone who passes the ball to Steph.
Nobody would say that Draymond in his prime comes even close to Robertson in his prime, but that shouldn’t be a license for Robertson to diminish Draymond’s career achievements.
Green could’ve said a lot more to attack Robertson’s take but his overall response was probably the rudest he could get given the circumstances. He’s averaging 8.5 points, 5.8 rebounds, and 5.7 assists this season, proving his impact is more than just passing the ball to Steph but also that he can’t be a core offensive option.
