Kevin Durant ruffled a lot of feathers recently by suggesting that his jerseys should be retired by both the Golden State Warriors and Oklahoma City Thunder for what he achieved with both teams.
Many have taken to oppose that statement, as KD spent just three seasons with Golden State and is one of the most despised players in OKC history for his departure in 2016 to join the Warriors. However, he is a two-time Finals MVP with the Warriors and the first league MVP from the Thunder.
Chris Mullin, a man who has had his number retired by the Warriors, commented on what KD said and vociferously agreed that KD deserves to join players like him up in the Warriors rafters.
Should the Warriors retire KD’s number?

“100%. And there are different levels of accomplishment. Kevin Durant’s tenure here with the Golden State Warriors were three NBA Finals, won two Finals MVPs and as you said Bonta, he went out there and sacrificed his body to try to get that third championship in a row. He’s as unique of a player as we’ve seen in the history of basketball… This generation right now, that’s why they are going to have numerous jerseys retired with different franchises because they’ve had that impact on the game of basketball, which we never have seen before.”
Mullin makes a great point. In terms of achievements, Durant is already one of the most decorated Warriors players of all time. The only exception is Stephen Curry in terms of individual achievements, but even he doesn’t have a Finals MVP to his name.
Durant made the Warriors unbeatable for three seasons and sacrificed over a year of his career after tearing his Achilles’ in his final game for the Warriors. He has the resume of someone who should have their jersey retired, even if his time there wasn’t very long.
