Spurs guard De’Aaron Fox wasted no time cutting ties with some of his former teammates. On Instagram, fans were taken aback when Fox suddenly unfollowed his former Kings teammate Domantas Sabonis. When confronted with questions, Fox brutally explained that he was never friends with the big man and that he “doesn’t care to see” whatever Sabonis has going on.
Fan: “Why did you unfollow Sabonis?”
De’Aaron Fox: “Don’t care to see it. Why’s that your problem?”
Fan: “Damn like that? Ight.”
De’Aaron Fox: “Like what? I don’t care to see it.”
Fan: “That’s yo boy tho?!”
De’Aaron Fox: “We were teammates… it’s okay not to be close to everybody.”
No NBA player is truly safe from the trade block and we saw that this season with some historically big trade deals. Anytime a star is traded, it always shakes up the NBA hierarchy but it can also reveal some truths about their previous destination.
In the case of De’Aaron Fox, his recent trade to the Spurs is telling us a lot about his tenure in Sacramento. Drafted 5th overall in 2017, Fox was the face and leader of the Kings franchise. With career averages of 21.5 points, 3.9 rebounds, and 6.1 assists per game on 47.1% shooting, he’s been the heart behind their recent success in the West.
But after a disappointing season (that followed an impressive run with the Kings), Fox was traded at the deadline to the Spurs in a three-team deal involving Bulls guard Zach LaVine, Kings forward Kevin Huerter, and multiple draft picks.
The Kings trusted their future to Fox and they chose him over the budding young star Tyrese Haliburton, who is leading a rising Indiana Pacers squad.
Fox hasn’t looked back since and he already has a 30-point game under his belt alongside Victor Wembanyama. But fans couldn’t help but notice how quick he was to unfollow his former co-star Domantas Sabonis, the guy who helped him bring success to the Kings franchise.
For whatever reason, Fox and Sabonis did not develop a friendship and they didn’t vibe enough to stay in touch after the trade. The lack of connection could explain why the duo failed to accomplish more in Sacramento and it could also explain why they dropped down to 9th in the West last season.
While Fox and Sabonis may not have beef, they clearly aren’t fond of each other and it likely put the Kings in a situation where they had to choose between one and the other. Ultimately, they chose to stick with Sabonis, who is averaging 20.4 points, 14.3 rebounds, and 6.3 assists per game this season.
Alongside Zach LaVine, DeMar DeRozan, and Keegan Murray, Sabonis is leading the Kings to a respectable place in the West and has them in position for a spot in the play-in. it remains to be seen how far the Kings can go as presently constructed but the locker room culture and player chemistry must be on point if they are to challenge the juggernauts in the West.
Meanwhile, for Fox, he has already moved on from his Kings tenure. After leaving the team, he no longer has the heart to stay invested and he’s cutting those off who he once called his teammates. De’Aaron is making a fresh new start with the Spurs and he won’t let anything from his past disrupt the transition.
