Aaron Gordon, a key defensive player for the Denver Nuggets during their 2023 title run, recently shared his insights on the toughest player to guard among a star-studded lineup, including LeBron James, Kevin Durant, Anthony Edwards, Karl-Anthony Towns, and Jimmy Butler. Speaking on the ‘Knuckleheads’ podcast, Gordon singled out Butler as the most challenging assignment.

“I feel like Jimmy really. I think he was little bit out of gas towards the end of it, he was going crazy in the earlier rounds. I think his ability to kind of just to work the game and stay poised. He has a little bit of everything, he can shoot the trey, he can shoot the middy, he’s always moving on offense, he’s cutting.” (2:40)

Gordon acknowledged the well-rounded skill set of Jimmy Butler, highlighting his ability to work the game effectively, maintain composure, and contribute in various aspects. He emphasized Butler’s versatility, noting his proficiency in three-point shooting, mid-range shots, and constant movement on offense, which made him a dynamic offensive threat.

Having faced tough matchups throughout the playoffs, guarding the likes of Anthony Edwards, Karl-Anthony Towns, Kevin Durant, LeBron James, and ultimately Jimmy Butler in the NBA Finals, Gordon shared his perspective on the defensive challenges each player presented. While Butler may have been slightly fatigued towards the end of the series, Gordon emphasized the relentless energy and scoring prowess Butler displayed in the earlier rounds.

Gordon’s defensive contributions were crucial to the Nuggets’ success in the 2023 championship run. As the designated defender against opponents’ top wings, he made life difficult for star players, forcing them to work hard for their points and impact on the game. Gordon’s ability to successfully navigate these defensive assignments played a significant role in the Nuggets’ triumph, showcasing his defensive prowess against some of the league’s elite talents.
