During the Minnesota Timberwolves’ narrow Game 2 loss to the Dallas Mavericks in the Western Conference Finals, Anthony Edwards faced an unexpected challenge. According to ESPN’s Dave McMenamin, from 7:53 to 5:31 remaining in the fourth quarter, Edwards was checked out of the game and seen receiving oxygen via a face mask in the tunnel by the Minnesota bench.

Edwards’ need for oxygen highlighted the physical toll these high-stakes games were taking on him. The grueling seven-game series against the Nuggets seemed to have left the Timberwolves star running on fumes. Edwards’ condition and performance in the final moments of Game 2 raised concerns about his ability to maintain peak performance throughout the rest of the series.

Edwards, who had been instrumental in the Timberwolves’ playoff run, seemed to be facing physical exhaustion. This came as a surprise to many, given his age and peak physical condition. Throughout the series against the Denver Nuggets, Edwards had been a force, helping eliminate the defending champions in seven games.

However, his performance in the Western Conference Finals did not meet the same standards. In Game 1, Edwards finished with 19 points on 6-of-16 shooting, and Game 2 saw a slight improvement with 21 points but a continued struggle with efficiency, shooting 5-of-17 from the field.

The Timberwolves, having lost their second straight home game, now face a daunting task as they head to Dallas trailing 2-0 in the series. Despite their impressive 5-1 road record this postseason, the need for Edwards to be at his best is more crucial than ever.

With Karl-Anthony Towns struggling and the team looking for consistent offensive contributions, Edwards’ ability to recover and perform at his usual high level will be key to Minnesota’s chances of staging a comeback.

As the series progresses, the Timberwolves will need to manage Edwards‘ minutes and physical condition carefully. The team’s success hinges on his ability to lead and perform under pressure, making it imperative for Minnesota to find ways to keep their young star fresh and effective against a formidable Mavericks squad led by Luka Doncic.

Anthony Edwards Is Losing His Chance To Be The Future Face Of The NBA

Anthony Edwards is facing a critical moment in his young NBA career. In the first two rounds of the playoffs, he was dominant, showcasing the skills and potential that many believed could make him the future face of the NBA. Against the Phoenix Suns in the first round, Edwards averaged 31.0 points, 8.0 rebounds, and 6.3 assists per game, leading his team to an impressive sweep.

His performance was even more remarkable in the grueling seven-game series against the defending champion Denver Nuggets, where he averaged 27.7 points, 5.7 assists, and 5.1 rebounds.

However, in the Western Conference Finals against the Dallas Mavericks, Edwards’ performance has noticeably declined. Through the first two games, he is averaging 20.0 points, 8.0 rebounds, and 7.5 assists, a respectable stat line but a significant drop from his earlier playoff performances. More concerning are his shooting percentages, which have plummeted, indicating struggles with efficiency and possibly fatigue.

This downturn comes at a crucial time when Edwards had the opportunity to cement his status as one of the NBA’s next superstars. At 22 years old, he had a chance to become the new face of the league, stepping into a role vacated by aging veterans.

However, he is being upstaged by 25-year-old Luka Doncic, who has been sensational in the same series. Doncic’s clutch performances, including a game-winning shot over Rudy Gobert, have highlighted his ability to rise to the occasion, a quality that separates good players from great ones.

Edwards’ struggles in the conference finals could be attributed to the physical and mental toll of the playoffs, especially after the exhausting series against Denver. Yet, for a player aspiring to be the face of the NBA, these moments are where legends are made. Edwards must find a way to elevate his game and lead his team back into the series. His current trajectory, while still impressive, falls short of the superstar status many expected him to achieve this postseason.

If Edwards can overcome this slump and deliver in the remaining games, he can still solidify his place among the league’s elite. However, continued struggles could delay or even derail his ascent to the top, allowing other young stars like Doncic to take the spotlight.
