Despite Simmons’ antics, the Philadelphia 76ers awarded him with a five-year, $177.2 million contract extension that kicked in from the 2020-21 NBA season. Simmons did have an All-Star season that year, averaging 14.3 points, 7.2 rebounds, and 6.9 assists per game.

However, he had a huge feud with the 76ers organization. Simmons requested a trade and sat down for the majority of the 2021-22 NBA season. The then-25-year-old’s request was fulfilled when he was traded to the Brooklyn Nets for James Harden.

Initially, Ben Simmons formed a superteam with Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving for the 2022-23 NBA season. But fast forward to this summer, Durant and Irving are gone, while Simmons remains the lone star for the Nets. Even though Ben didn’t put up numbers close to an All-Star last season, he will be making more than $37 million for the upcoming season.

With that being said, here’s a detailed breakdown of Ben Simmons’ earnings with the Nets for the 2023-24 NBA season.

2023-24 Season: $37,893,408

Ben Simmons averaged just 6.9 points, 6.3 rebounds, and 6.1 assists per game in the 2022-23 season. He featured in just 42 games and missed the other 42 games due to injuries. Simmons will remain under contract with the Nets for the 2023-24 season.

He will be earning $37,893,408 for his services, which makes him the 20th highest-paid player in the NBA. Simmons will be earning more than the likes of Kyrie Irving, Devin Booker, and Karl-Anthony Towns. It’s a lot of money for a player who has played just 100 games combined over the last three NBA seasons.

Per Game: $462,114

Assuming Ben Simmons plays the entire 82 games next season, he will be earning a whopping $462,114 per game. But let’s be realistic. Simmons is 27 years old and has never played the full 82 games in his career, even once.

The closest he came was during his rookie year in the 2017-18 NBA season, where he featured in 81 games. Simmons played 79 games in the 2018-19 NBA season, but since then, he has never played more than 58 games in a season.

Keeping that in mind, the Nets will essentially end up paying Simmons more than the designated per-game amount. Sure, Simmons claims he’s ready for the 2023-24 season, but only time will tell how much truth there is to it.

Per Quarter: $115,528

This is where things get interesting about Simmons’ contract. Ben Simmons will be essentially making more money by playing a few quarters than some of his teammates will in the entire season.

Simmons will roughly make $2.3 million by playing just 20 quarters, which means five games in the season. On the other hand, his teammates Cameron Thomas, Lonnie Walker IV, and Dennis Smith Jr. will be making less money than that for the entire 2023-24 season.

Had Simmons been averaging All-Star numbers, that wouldn’t have been an issue. But looking at the way he has struggled all-around last season makes it hard to see him return to an All-Star caliber player. Simmons is still just 27 years old, there’s still a slim hope about his career’s revival.

Per Minute: $9,627

Once again, assuming Ben Simmons plays the entire 48 minutes of a normal NBA game, he will be taking home $9,627 per minute. It is still more than James Harden, who will be making $9,054 per minute in the 2023-24 NBA season.

Considering Simmons will be the starting point guard for the Brooklyn Nets in the next season, he can earn every penny of his contract. But there’s always the chance that Simmons has yet another injury or a string of poor games that will sideline him. Now, if that happens, his per-minute earnings will seem like a poor decision to the Nets.

Per Second: $160

Looking at Simmons’ earnings per second makes an average human being feel poor. I know, I feel that way. After all, Simmons earns more money per second than what most of us make in a day.

But in comparison to NBA money, it’s still not as eye-popping as Stephen Curry’s per-second income. Curry will be the highest-paid player in the NBA for the 2023-24 season, racking in $51,915,615 over 82 games. It means Steph will earn $219 per second next season.

Career Earnings: $125,125,137

As of now, Ben Simmons has already earned $125,125,137 in career earnings over his seven-year career in the NBA. Out of which, he has missed two whole seasons. Simmons has averaged 14.7 points, 7.8 rebounds, and 7.5 assists per game.

But wait, that’s not the end of the road for the 27-year-old star. Once his five-year, $177 million contract is over, he will have earned an estimated $203,356,689 over nine seasons.

Most fans believe that Simmons hasn’t earned his $177 million contract. He can change that by returning to All-Star form over the next two seasons. But until then, Simmons is on the trajectory to become one of the most overpaid players in NBA history.
