Superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo is the face of the Milwaukee Bucks, and there’s no doubt that he is having another elite two-way season. He is the best player on the best team in the league, yet somehow, he is only third in MVP voting.
Antetokounmpo’s teammate Brook Lopez has claimed that the forward should be the MVP this season, suggesting that the reason he isn’t the MVP is because of voter fatigue. Jamal Collier of ESPN relayed the news.
“It’s honestly like he makes being elite, elite, an all-time great player look routine,” Lopez said. “Which in itself is impressive. I think people maybe don’t hold it against him, but it’s voter fatigue.”
“Jokic is a great player, all deserved, Embiid is a great player, all deserved. But it’s just kind of the way it is with Giannis. He’s so great that that’s the reality that comes with it.”
We have indeed seen Giannis Antetokounmpo be dominant consistently, and now it’s almost as if people are used to his greatness. Ultimately though, Giannis Antetokounmpo wants to win championships over chasing individual awards.
As of right now, Giannis Antetokounmpo is averaging 31.1 PPG, 11.8 RPG, and 5.6 APG for the Milwaukee Bucks. His impact and production suggest that Antetokounmpo deserves the MVP award, but it is clear that other players also have fantastic cases for the award.
Giannis Antetokounmpo Previously Questioned The MVP Criteria
Every single year, it seems as though what it means to be the MVP changes. Previously, Giannis Antetokounmpo spoke out against the criteria for the award constantly shifting.
“Like, I believe — and I know — that people are dominating. So what is the MVP? Is it the guy who scores the most points? Is it the guy who’s the most efficient? Is it the guy who is the most dominant? Is it the guy who is the most valuable? Sometimes, the best player isn’t the most valuable player on the team. Like, I feel like Brook Lopez is such a valuable player for our team. Like (the MVP criteria) just f——- — sorry for my language — it just changes. As I said again, I can’t control that. I can control only how I prepare for the game and try to be ready for the game.”
It is clear that every season is different, so perhaps the criteria shift based on the occurrences in each season. Still, it is frustrating for players to consistently deal with inconsistencies in the voting process, and hopefully, we see this issue get resolved in the future.
