The Cleveland Cavaliers decided to unveil their new City edition jerseys in front of their fans to gauge their reaction. Unfortunately, the reaction was overwhelmingly negative, with two fans openly dissing the jersey as it is shown for the first time.

“That sucks. That’s garbage. Oh my god. What the hell was that?”

The Cavaliers tend to be one of those teams that can swing either way with the jerseys they design. While last year’s all-white ‘The Land’ jerseys were uninspiring, they were incredibly aesthetic to look at. White jerseys inherently look clean, and the Cavs’ minimal jersey design ended up making that look even better.

Reverting to a more traditional team color like red/maroon for the City edition jerseys makes sense, but keeping the same design elements that made the white jersey successful wasn’t the right move. They should’ve redesigned more than just the font and then maybe fans on social media wouldn’t tear this apart.

Fans Across The NBA Seem Disappointed

The reveal of City edition jerseys for the 2023/24 season has not gone well. Most fans have overwhelmingly rejected the designs that their teams are likely going to wear for being unimaginative and sparse. With a similar complaint against the Cavaliers being made now, fans on social media were furious at their decision to use this bland jersey.

A fan had a descriptive one-word reaction that captured what a lot of fans felt.

Fans noticed how it seemed like not a single person liked the jersey as it was unveiled.

The criticism against Nike designers also continued.

Fans also think the Cavaliers made a mistake by doing a proper jersey reveal instead of just sharing images on social media as many other teams have done.

The similarity between the City edition and the team’s ‘Association’ jerseys has also irked fans.

One fan jokingly said that these designs would ultimately cause Donovan Mitchell to leave the franchise.

There is no amount of fan vitriol that’ll lead to new jerseys being put in for the season, especially now that we are a week out from the first tip-off of the 2023/24 season. Hopefully, the negative reactions to City edition jerseys across the league this season prompt the league and Nike to work on improving their designs for next season.

Donovan Mitchell Yet To Commit His Future To The Cavaliers

Donovan Mitchell was the headline name of the 2022 offseason after he was moved to the Cavaliers after a summer of being linked to the Knicks, similar to how Damian Lillard got moved to the Bucks after a summer of being linked to the Heat.

Mitchell had a fantastic debut season with the Cavaliers, leading them to a top-four seed while averaging 28.3 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 4.4 assists. This helped him earn his first All-NBA selection of his career. Mitchell is still ascending in the NBA and the Cavaliers have made a risky bet that he will fulfill his potential in Cleveland, with the star not expected to sign a contract extension this season.

“I still have the opportunity to sign an extension next summer,” said Mitchell earlier this month. “My primary focus is this. Just trying to go out there and trying to be the best team we can be and bring a championship to the city and go from there.”

Unless the Cavs can make some serious moves to become an instant title contender, they could be in danger of losing Mitchell for nothing. It’ll be fascinating to see how this plays out with the Cavaliers expected to be a threat in the East this season.
