Cedric Maxwell recently shared a memorable story on the ‘Truth Lounge’ podcast about his first practice with Larry Bird, revealing how the legendary forward quickly earned his respect.

“I was the first guy really to guard Larry. And I remember I was like you, I was the king of the mountain, man. I was averaging about 20 and 10 when Bird got here. So I’m thinking he’s coming to this building.”

“I’m looking at him, but we have the first practice. I’m thinking like, psh, this ought to be a piece of cake. This guy don’t look fast, don’t look good. I’m about to, you know, I’m about to do something to him.”

“Boy, I’m telling you what, hey, it changed my opinion about racism in this world. Because I remember he scored the first basket… I scored on him, second basket, but as I proceeded, he kept going further and further and further away.”

“And by the end of the practice, it finished. The first black person I went to, I got to, I said, you know what? That f***ng white guy can play down there. he didn’t give you the looks, but then every other person of color would ask me when the Celtics got ready to play they’re like ‘Yo man how’s this kid Bird, you bout to find out’.” (0:58)

Maxwell, who was already an established player averaging around 20 points and 10 rebounds, initially underestimated Bird based on his appearance. However, Bird’s performance during that practice session changed Maxwell’s perspective entirely.

When Bird joined the Boston Celtics, Maxwell was the first to guard him. Confident and dismissive, Maxwell thought Bird’s unassuming looks and seemingly slow pace would make him an easy opponent. He assumed it would be an easy task, given Bird’s appearance and demeanor. However, the reality was far different.

As the practice progressed, Bird quickly demonstrated his skills. Maxwell managed to score on Bird, but Bird responded by consistently outplaying him, showcasing his shooting range and basketball IQ. By the end of the practice, Maxwell was thoroughly impressed. He realized Bird’s talent was undeniable, despite his initial doubts based on Bird’s appearance.

Bird’s performance not only impressed Maxwell but also sparked curiosity among other players. When the Celtics were about to face other teams, Maxwell would often hear questions about Bird’s abilities. His response was clear: they were about to witness something special.

Maxwell’s story highlights the impact Bird had from the very beginning of his career. Bird, often regarded as one of the greatest basketball players of all time, proved his worth immediately. His arrival marked the beginning of a new era for the Celtics, leading them to multiple championships.

During his eight seasons with the Celtics, Cedric Maxwell himself made significant contributions, averaging 13.7 points, 6.6 rebounds, and 2.3 assists per game. He won two NBA titles alongside Bird, forming a key part of the team’s success during that period.

This story is a testament to Larry Bird’s undeniable talent and the respect he earned from his peers, even those who initially doubted him. It also underscores the importance of looking beyond first impressions, as true skill and determination can defy expectations and leave a lasting legacy.
