The Milwaukee Bucks made the difficult decision to part ways with Mike Budenholzer after the team was shockingly eliminated in the first round of the 2023 NBA Playoffs.

The front office waited for a couple of days before letting coach Bud go, sparking a lot of reactions around the league. Besides the ones criticizing the Bucks for firing their head coach two years after winning the NBA championship, others started creating theories about what happened.

On that note, Colin Cowherd explained that Giannis Antetokounmpo had something to do with this.

“The reason Budenholzer was fired is Giannis because when you have Giannis, you can’t get rolled in a series when you’re a favorite and get outcoached,” Cowherd said. “… The better the stars, the higher the expectations. … That’s the downside of to having a transcendent, generational superstar player. You can’t give away games.”

This is an interesting explanation, which makes a lot of sense. Giannis is one of the best players in the world, an MVP finalist in the last three seasons, and the MVP winner in 2019 and 2020.

He was crucial in the 2021 NBA championship run, helping his team round after round, making the plays, recording incredible performances, and saving the squad more than once.

Many think that Giannis was the reason Budenholzer kept his job for so long since he was outcoached more than once in the playoffs. Giannis himself showed his discomfort when talking about guarding Jimmy Butler in the playoffs, making it clear that it was the coach who prevented him from going against the Miami Heat star.

Budenholzer Became The Third Of The Last Four NBA Champion Coaches To Be Dismissed

With the firing of Budenholzer, three of the last four NBA champion coaches have been fired by their teams. Steve Kerr is the only one who keeps his job, while Nick Nurse (2019), Frank Vogel (2020), and Budenholzer (2021) are looking to get a new chance to coach in the league.

The Bucks have a lot of work to do this offseason, as they look for a new head coach and maybe a big roster overhaul to create a new championship squad.
