After starting the season 2-10, nobody had faith that the Los Angeles Lakers could even make the playoffs, much less a trip to the Western Conference Finals. And yet, after a slew of trades in February, the Lakers did just that in a miraculous and stunning turnaround.

The peak of this run came in the second round against the Warriors. After so much hype around the matchup, LeBron and the Lakers rose to the occasion to win the series, and D’Angelo Russell says their collective fire-power was just too much for the Dubs to handle.

“I personally I always feel like the Warriors were like a team you couldn’t bet against, right? They always figure out whatever formula y’all trying to approach them with,” said D’Lo on the Patrick Beverley podcast. “But when you got Bron and AD and whatever other pieces we had it was tough for them to match up against us… Going into the series, I was thinking like ‘they gotta guard us’ and that’s different from in previous years when it was always ‘you gotta guard them.’ They had a hard time of stopping us and I think that’s where the separation was.”

We all know what LeBron James and Anthony Davis are capable of when healthy, and we saw that in 2020 when they won the title together amid a wild season of chaos. This time, while they didn’t go all the way, they did something almost just as impressive by dragging a nearly lifeless Lakers team into the postseason.

By the time they got there, the role-players proved their worth and we saw Austin Reaves, D’Angelo Russell, and others deliver in big moments when it counted most. The question is, can the Lakers do something similar again next season, or has their window of opportunity already slammed shut?

The Lakers Are Running It Back After Promising Run

The season came to an end in Los Angeles in the Conference Finals, when they were swept in a 4-0 sweep against the Nuggets. The series showed that while LA was still better than most of their peers, they weren’t quite on the same level as Denver, who were just deeper and better-equipped in every way.

Next year, the Nuggets will still be there as a major threat in the West, but so will the Suns, Clippers, and plenty of other teams vying for control. But after making some solid new additions, you have to say that the Lakers stand as much of a chance as anyone, especially if their two stars can stay healthy.
