• D’Angelo Russell believes his half-season stint in 2019-20 with the Warriors has helped him figure out their system
• He and Patrick Beverley discussed the same on the latest episode of the ‘PatBev Podcast’
• Russell was on the winning end of a 2023 second-round matchup against the Warriors
D’Angelo Russell had a stint on the Golden State Warriors during their worst season in recent memory, playing half the 2019-20 season with the team before being traded to the Minnesota Timberwolves for Andrew Wiggins and the pick that became Jonathan Kuminga.
Patrick Beverley discussed Russell’s performances against Golden State since they traded him away on his podcast.

“I knew their system, honestly. When I got to play there, I was literally like, ‘I don’t know if imma be here, but I’m about to see everything they got going on as far as the way they play. What did they go to in the last two minutes of the game? What plays do they use to close the quarter out? How Steve is trying to manipulate the game. Like, I picked up all of that… The little ins and outs of the game, that you don’t get to see, I was ready for.”
Despite their discussion, it seems D’Lo has struggled against Golden State. His scoring average against them in 10 games since leaving is 12.7 points on 32.7% shooting from the field, well below his overall per-game average of 18.2 points on 43.8% shooting since leaving.
He averaged 14.7 points, 2.8 rebounds, and 4.2 assists on 31% shooting from 3-point range and 45.6% from the field in his 2023 second-round matchup against Golden State. Though his perimeter shooting struggled, he did have some strong moments and will hope to excel next season.
D’Angelo Russell Looking To Be The Lakers’ Starting Point Guard
It’s a stretch to say Russell knowing the Warriors’ system has led to success for him. His numbers show the opposite, but he needs to use whatever information he has, as the Warriors are now his division rivals. They’ll face him at least four times in the regular season next year.
He will be fighting for his starting job against Gabe Vincent, but his offensive reliability may give him the edge. He’ll need to work on his defense, as Vincent is a proven contributor on that end. With an offense that’ll run through LeBron James and Anthony Davis, starting Vincent and using him as a 3-and-D guard may fit better for their system.
