- DeMarcus Cousins doesn’t understand the Chris Paul trade
- Former league big man says CP3 will make little to no impact for Dubs
- Cousins suggests it was a mistake to trade Jordan Poole for an aging veteran
After a season of drama with Jordan Poole, everyone knew the Warriors were going to make some serious changes this summer. But after swapping Poole for 38-year-old Chris Paul, doubts are starting to creep in regarding the trajectory of this Warriors team.
Speaking on Sirius XM NBA Radio, former NBA big man DeMarcus Cousins (who once played for Golden State) became the latest to criticize the move, pointing out that it ultimately failed to make the Warriors any better…
“I gotta be honest, I didn’t understand the Chris Paul trade. Then I looked at it like maybe they want to free up the books for next season. But as far as it being about basketball and Xs and Os on the court, I don’t really see that elevating the Golden State Warriors. He’s up in age. You got rid of a young, youthful guy for an aging veteran. I’m not taking away from anything Chris Paul has done in his career I’m just speaking on this stage of his career. I don’t see him elevating the Golden State Warriors.”

Chris Paul has managed to be effective for a surprisingly long time, but at almost 40 years old, his impact on the game is going to be limited. As a starter for the Suns last season, CP3 struggled to stay healthy and saw major dips in his stats across the board.
Going into this next season, the Warriors will be asking Paul to come off the bench and orchestrate the second unit when the starters are on the bench. It remains to be seen how CP3 will lift this role, but his slow and calculated playstyle seems like an awkward fit in Golden State’s quick and high-powered offense.
Are Warriors A Contender Next Season?
After losing in the second round to the Lakers, and losing Jordan Poole this offseason, there’s a growing sentiment that the Warriors are finally on the decline. Of course, considering the age and mileage of the Warriors’ core players, that assessment may turn out to be correct.
In the West alone, the Warriors are out-gunned by the Nuggets, Suns, and Clippers, who all pose a significant threat to win the conference. Unless they make another move here soon, it’s hard to say that they belong in the same tier as those other teams.
For Chris Paul specifically, the jury is still out on how much he’ll actually change things in Golden State, but having him is certainly better than keeping Poole, who was causing major division and strife in the locker room.
