Derrick Rose will sport No. 23 on his Memphis Grizzlies jersey, his collegiate number, which we wore for the Memphis Tigers.

In his one collegiate season with the team, Rose averaged 14.9 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 4.7 assists in 40 games leading the Tigers to a 38-2 record. They made the National Championship but lost to Kansas. Now, Rose will call Memphis his home again donning a number that’s nostalgic to most fans from the city.

The former MVP signed with the Grizzlies after the New York Knicks declined his $15.6 million player option. Reports suggest that he intends to ink a multi-year deal with the team.

Coming back to Rose’s jersey numbers, he wore No. 25 in high school and made the switch to 23 after the school retired the number in honor of Penny Hardaway. He changed to No. 1 with the Chicago Bulls and then got back to 25 again with the Knicks. He would also add No. 4 to his jersey collection, but will now be back to his collegiate digit.

Can Derrick Rose Make An Impact With The Grizzlies?

The Memphis Grizzlies have added some solid players this offseason, with Marcus Smart and Derrick Rose. While the former bolsters their defense, the latter is a perfect talent for Ja Morant, who will miss the first 25 games of the season.

In Ja’s absence, Rose will have the responsibility to step up and the veteran will be keen to prove a point after being benched with the Knicks for the majority of the past season.

He averaged a paltry 5.6 PPG, 1.5 RPG, and 1.7 APG for the Knicks. However, in the two seasons prior, he notched put up 13.8 PPG, 2.7 RPG, and 4.1 APG while shooting 39.4% from the 3PT range, and if he can get back to that level of play with the Grizzlies, Rose could end up as one of the best steals in this summer’s free agency.
