It was almost two years ago that Draymond Green punched Jordan Poole in the face during a team practice. It remains one of the most shocking events in recent NBA history and on The Draymond Green Show, Green revealed just how embarrassed he was afterward.

“I was so embarrassed to be around our team last year with JP was still on the team that I came to everything (late),” Green said. “I was probably late last season 20 times and I just paid a fine… I was so embarrassed to show my face during those times that I would time everything up.

“Like, if we’re on the road, I’d time it up to the minute I need to get there and if the elevator took a little bit longer than it was supposed to, I’d be late,” Green continued. “Or if I’m leaving my crib, which is like 7-8 minutes away from the facility, I time it up to the minute of where I need to arrive, and if the red light right there in front of the Giants stadium, Oracle Park, if the red light got me, I’d be 2-3 minutes late.”

I think anyone would be quite embarrassed after punching a teammate like Green did. It remains unclear to this day what exactly Poole said to get a reaction like that out of him, but considering the likes of Stephen Curry and Steve Kerr came to the young guard’s defense right after, it clearly wasn’t anything too egregious.

Green eventually apologized for the act, but the damage had already been done. The relationship between them was beyond repair and it seemed inevitable that one of the two would be shipped out of town at some point. That ended up being Poole, who the Golden State Warriors traded to the Washington Wizards in 2023.

It was sad to see how things had ended on such a terrible note. Poole had played a big role in the Warriors winning the title in 2022 and was seen as a future cornerstone for the franchise. Then a year later, he was gone.

As for Green, the Warriors ended up re-signing him to a four-year, $100 million deal not long after Poole was traded. While some of that embarrassment went away for the four-time All-Star with the guard’s departure, he certainly didn’t stay out of trouble, getting suspended multiple times this season.

Jordan Poole Has Struggled On The Wizards

The one silver lining from Poole’s departure was that many thought he would shine when he finally got a bigger role on a team. It was also felt that a change in surroundings would help him, but that didn’t prove to be the case.

Poole’s first season with the Wizards proved to be a disaster. The 24-year-old averaged just 17.4 points, 2.7 rebounds, 4.4 assists, 1.1 steals, and 0.3 blocks per game in the 2023-24 campaign. He also shot just 41.3% from the field and seemed to have a never-ending lowlight reel.

Poole did at least have a decent end to the season (he averaged 22.6 PPG in his last 10 games) and I hope that was a sign of things to come in the future. He clearly is a talented young man and just needs to rediscover some of that magic from 2022.
