In a guest appearance on the ‘Podcast P’ show, Warriors veteran Draymond Green gave his thoughts on a variety of topics ranging from the upcoming NBA season to the importance of confidence in the process of winning. At one point, Draymond even reflected on the past and the infamous 2016 season.

That year, the Dubs broke the NBA’s single-season win record by going 73-9 only to lose in the NBA Finals. Before the playoffs began, the Dubs were literally unstoppable, and Green recalls how every road trip was like a circus for whatever city they were in.

“People always talk about ‘load management,’ the amount of stuff I played through that year, and we all played through just to get that was insane. If you told me today ‘y’all can win 73 games next year and actually close the deal and win a championship’ I may say ‘no I’m cool.’ We played in Milwaukee and we were 24-0. They had shirts made, 24-1 and they were going crazy. And when they won that game stopped our 24-0 streak, I think they had a bigger parade for that game than they did when they actually won a championship. Every game, no matter where we went, it’s like the circus was coming to town.”

It took the Warriors weeks to lose their first game, so they were on track for history from almost the very start. As great as it was for everyone involved, it took a tool on the players, many of which had to play through injuries to avoid missing any time.

By the end of it, the Warriors were completely gassed and it could be part of the reason they couldn’t close the deal after going up 3-1 against the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Draymond Says He Would Have Gotten Finals MVP If Warriors Won 2016 Finals

Back in 2016, the Splash Bros were in their absolute prime and the entire Warriors offense ran through them. Still, Draymond was a huge part of their success, and his play in the postseason helped bring them to another level.

“It’s like the greatest teaser of my life,” said Dray. “I had 32 points, 15 boards, and 9 assists. If we win Game 7, I’m the Finals MVP.”

There’s no going back to change history now, and nobody will forget how the Warriors failed to close the deal when it mattered most. But back when it was happening, the Warriors had the entire NBA world at their mercy and every fan wanted to witness history in the making.
