French rookie Victor Wembanyama has been called the greatest young prospect since LeBron James, and he is not shying away from the pressure. Since entering the NBA, ad even months before the Draft, Wemby has been unapologetic about the hype and has never wavered in confidence that he can live up to expectations.

In fact, during an interview with longtime Spurs fan Michelle Beadle, Victor Wembanyama revealed that his competitive nature is part of the motivation behind his iconic jersey number. Apparently, he wears no. 1 because he wants to be first in everything that he does, especially basketball.

“It’s a mentality thing,” said Victor. “No. 1 because there’s no other option but to be number 1. I can’t accept to be behind someone in some way.”

Of course, Wemby was the first pick in the NBA draft and he hasn’t been shy about setting high standards for himself. Coming off a dominant run with the Metropolitans 92, he’s hoping that his game will translate immediately into the NBA world but it remains to be seen how much of an impact he will have at the start.

Wembanyama Has The Keys To The Spurs Franchise

Wemby has yet to play a minute in the NBA, but his head is clearly in the right place. Humble yet confident, Victor has shown the willingness to develop his game and learn how to lead the Spurs to an era of greatness.

“He’ll have a target on his back,” said Gregg Popovich. “So more than Os and Xs to begin with, we’ll be mostly interested in setting a framework and an environment where he’s comfortable, where he can be Victor. He’s not LeBron or Tim or Kobe or anybody else, he’s Victor and that’s who we want him to be.”

The Spurs are giving Vic the green light to play his game, and it will be quite an amazing sight to see. Already, the signs are looking good and if confidence is any way to measure what is to come, then Wembayama is sure to make a lot of noise as he makes his transition to the NBA.
