Dwight Howard is not a happy man. Not after the Taoyuan Leopards reduced his contract by a whopping 65%.
The former Los Angeles Lakers star expressed his displeasure when speaking about the pay cut. “After the season, I was offered a contract that was 65% less than what they gave me the first time to come to Taiwan. I felt like that was very disrespectful. I felt like I brought value to the team. They asked me for a 65% decrease in payment – I was very disappointed. I felt like I deserve more,” he said.
Per Keoni Everington of the Taiwan News, Team CEO Chang Chien-wei said the contract offer for the big was based on a new calculation method. Chien-Wei also added that Howard missed ten of the team’s 30 games this season.
The 37-year-old made a key difference in the games he played, averaging 23.2 points and 16.2 rebounds per game, but the team failed to fare well, ending with a 6-24 run.
Can Dwight Howard Return To The NBA?
Dwight Howard still nurses ambitions to return to the NBA, and earlier, hoped that he could play for the Sacramento Kings and help them win a championship.
“I’m not retired from the NBA just yet,” Howard told Mark Haynes of The Observer. “I would love to help the Sacramento Kings contend for a title. Even though I believe their team is pretty much set.”
Prior to his Kings’ interest, in an interview with NBA insider Shams Charania, the center said, “I would love to come back to play in the NBA. I do enjoy playing international basketball. Just the experience is one of a kind. It’s a different type of grind of being in the NBA, and I had a chance to experience it. But I would love to finish off my career with an NBA team, hopefully, win an NBA championship.”
All of this, coupled with his games in Taiwan, goes on to show that Howard still has what it takes to make an impact in the NBA. Only time will tell if the league’s door is open for him to make a comeback.
