Calling people who are criticizing you on the basis of sexual assault allegations is wild. Howard should have just kept this in the drafts until further developments on the situation are revealed.
Howard was vying for an NBA return this season and came very close to it with the Warriors, with Draymond Green also publicly discussing the same. The Warriors ultimately decided against signing him, with many wondering if they knew these allegations were on their way to come out.
Howard may be an NBA legend for what he achieved on the court, but these allegations could end up ruining his reputation forever.
What Are The Allegations Against Dwight Howard?
The accusations against Howard come from a man called Stephen Harper, who accused Dwight of inviting him to his house in 2021 for some ‘freaky stuff’.
“Defendant stood up (towering over Mr. Harper), grabbed Mr. Harper by the thighs, forcibly removed Mr. Harper’s underwear, held Mr. Harper down, and performed nonconsensual oral sex on Mr. Harper,” the suit read. “Mr. Harper was in fear of imminent bodily harm when he was pinned down and forced to remain in place while Defendant continued to sexually assault him.”
In addition, Howard also had a man dressed as a woman called ‘Kitty’, allegedly coercing Harper into having a threesome with him and Kitty, something Harper didn’t want to do. Despite the revocation of consent, Howard made Kitty perform sexual acts on him with Harper watching, eventually making Harper join. Howard allegedly forced Harper to be dropped off at home by Kitty, with the pair not letting him leave prior to the end of everything.
This was a clearly uncomfortable situation for Harper and we’ll wait for the legal deliberations to reveal more of the case. This could turn out in a different way for Howard, but making jokes on Instagram won’t leave a good taste in the mouths of people.
We can safely assume that Howard is likely not going to find his way back into the league now, with the NBA being forced to address a string of legal issues with their players.
Adam Silver Was Forced To Address Recent Assault Allegations Against NBA Players
NBA Commissioner Adam Silver was made to address assault and domestic abuse allegations against unnamed NBA players by Charles Barkley on opening night.
“That’s an area where we’re not looking to compete against other leagues when you say forefront. I think all the leagues are trying to address this issue. But I know, again, our players association, credit to them, this wasn’t adversarial. We put in place a new program for how we deal with, first of all, accusations of domestic violence even before they’re prosecuted. Part of it goes to the training of our players. Counseling our players to make sure they understand during high-stress situations obviously never resort to violence against anyone and so we’re addressing it. We have state-of-the-art counseling professionals dealing with our players, but of course, if a guy does cross the line the consequences are enormous.”
The most recent incidents of domestic abuse in the league have come from Kevin Porter Jr. and Miles Bridges in very high-profile cases, which sees Bridges suspended by the Hornets once again while Porter Jr. is out of the league.
With pressure on the league for not taking action against the legal issues that players have been facing, Howard is going to be kept as far away as possible.
