  • Patrick McCaw was never more than a fringe NBA player, but he won three NBA championships
  • He signed this offseason with Belgian team Filou Oostende but had his deal with them canceled
  • Patrick McCaw was deported from Belgium over passport issues and locked up before being sent back to the United States

Patrick McCaw has enjoyed one of the most unique NBA careers at the age of 27. He won three NBA championships as a part of the Golden State Warriors and Toronto Raptors but now finds himself in a weird situation.

Patrick McCaw fell out of favor in the NBA and signed with Belgian team Filou Oostende on August 3, 2023. The former champion’s move to Belgium went wrong though, and the story is almost hard to believe.

“Former NBA player Patrick McCaw will not be seen in Belgian halls next season after all,” reported Sporza.

“The three-time NBA champion even spent several days locked up in Steenokkerzeel due to visa problems and was forced to return to the US. He was supposed to be Oostend’s top transfer, Patrick McCaw.”

The report went on to explain that when McCaw arrived in Belgium, he could not get past passport control. His passport showed up in the records as ‘lost’ or ‘stolen.’

Patrick McCaw was then detained at the transit center and despite attempts by the Minister of State, Johan Vande Lanotte, was forced to return to the United States.

He is not eligible for a visa for months after this whole fiasco, and as such, his deal with Oostende had to be canceled. This is a bizarre story and it just goes to show how unpredictable everything can be.

Patrick McCaw’s NBA Career Is Very Fascinating

Patrick McCaw was drafted in the second round of the 2016 NBA Draft by the Milwaukee Bucks, before being immediately traded to the Golden State Warriors.

This came at a great time for the Warriors, with the team also acquiring Kevin Durant that offseason and going on to win two NBA titles in a row. He played a fringe role in both years, averaging 4.0 points, 1.4 rebounds, and 1.2 assists per game.

With two NBA championships under his belt, McCaw had a brief stint with the Cleveland Cavaliers before signing with the Toronto Raptors in January of the 2018-19 season.

Again, McCaw was part of a team that went all the way and clinched an NBA championship, making him a 3-time NBA champion. His stock has fallen a lot since he can’t even get to play in Belgium, but his career has already been very fascinating.

Patrick McCaw Went Through A Lot During His Early Years In The NBA

Patrick McCaw has seen a lot of team success that NBA superstars haven’t been able to enjoy. But it has come at a cost too.

Patrick McCaw told the story of his worst rookie hazing during his early years with the Golden State Warriors once, and how Draymond Green and JaVale McGee among others dumped four buckets of water on him for forgetting something.

He became something of a meme after winning so many championships as a fringe player, but Patrick McCaw is still trying to get back to the highest level of professional basketball.

While imprisonment and deportation sound like a nightmare, maybe this will open up some different opportunities that could provide him with a path back to the NBA. He would surely love to add another couple of championships to his resume.
