Gregg Popovich On The Spurs’ Playoff Streak Ending After 22 Years: “That’s Fake News. That’s Total Fake News!”

2 Min Read

Just like Kawhi Leonard, Gregg Popovich is known for being a fun guy and not even the San Antonio Spurs’ first elimination of playoffs contention since 1997 can bring him down. Pop and his team had a very good run but all things come to an end, just like JJ Redick’s 13-season playoffs streak finished a couple of days ago.

Well, Pop took things with humor and he even mocked a very important political figure of the United States, mocking them with his statements. Talking about the Spurs’ playoff streak ending, the legendary head coach said:

“That’s fake news,” he said when discussing the Spurs’ playoff streak ending, per Mark Medina of USA Today. “That’s total fake news! Lots of guys have been telling me the streak hasn’t ended! I talk to people all the time. They call me. They tell me, ‘Pop, the streak didn’t end! It didn’t end!'”

In case you don’t get it, he was mocking POTUS Donald Trump and his comments about the things he considers ‘fake news’. Well, this is as real as it gets since the Spurs will have to wait until next season to see if they can get a playoffs berth after 22 years without missing the postseason. They didn’t have many expectations coming to the bubble, they were seen as a team to complete the pack and nothing else, but they had a chance to make the play-in tournament until the last day of the bubble.

Unfortunately for them, none of their rivals lost their game and now the Spurs have to leave Orlando early. They have a group of young players, including Dejounte Murray, Derrick White, Lonnie Walker IV and Keldon Johnson (one of the revelations of the bubble) well as veterans like DeMar DeRozan and LaMarcus Aldridge.

Pop hinted he will continue as the Spurs coach next season, trying to make a run for the playoffs once again.
