The entire world was in shock yesterday after an 18-year-old gunman shot up the Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas. The shooting took place 400 miles from the American Airlines Center, where the Dallas Mavericks were getting ready to host the Golden State Warriors in the Western Conference Finals.
Steve Kerr had an impactful and profound statement prior to the game, making it an uncomfortable night for many who couldn’t deal with why such a senseless tragedy could occur. The Boston Celtics and Miami Heat play in Game 5 of their Eastern matchup tonight and paid their tribute to the victims prior to the game.
Both teams lined up on opposite sides of the court, as the FTX Arena in Miami joined the teams in a moment of silence for the 19 victims of the tragic mass shooting.

The basketball world was full of socially and politically conscious players and coaches making statements after the shooting. Steve Kerr’s message was the most notable one, but Mavs head coach Jason Kidd also pointed out that these instances are becoming a problem across the country, with recent mass shootings in Buffalo and Southern California.
LeBron James has tweeted multiple times about this shooting, sending the message that children are presumed to be the safest when they are in school and that we need to do a better job of protecting them from such dangers. Jayson Tatum and many other dads in the sports world also shared their thoughts from the parental perspective of watching innocent children at school be in such danger.
Both the Celtics and the Heat have done what most sports arenas in the country should do and share a moment of silence in remembrance of the kids we lost. Our condolences go out to the families of everyone affected.
