  • Jalen Brunson will face Luka Doncic, who he was teammates with for many years on the Dallas Mavericks
  • Jalen Brunson called Luka Doncic his brother and explained that they have a special relationship

Jalen Brunson and Luka Doncic were both part of the 2018 NBA draft, being chosen by the Dallas Mavericks. Luka Doncic became an overnight superstar in the NBA, while Brunson’s journey was longer, but he has also emerged as an All-Star-level player with the New York Knicks.

There was speculation that the two would have beef with each other following Brunson’s departure in free agency last offseason. But Jalen Brunson spoke about their relationship in glowing terms in a recent interview ahead of the Team USA vs. Slovenia matchup.

“That’s my brother,” Brunson said of Doncic to The Athletic. “We got drafted together. I’ve been watching him grow since meeting him for the first time, seeing the player he is now.

“He’s gotten better and better each year to the point where he’s a top-five player, an MVP candidate, year in and year out, so whenever I get a chance to share the court with him, either with him or against him, it’s always been special. I’ve got nothing but love for him.”

Jalen Brunson has become the leader for Team USA, while Luka Doncic already fills that role for Slovenia. The two will meet as equals on the court, and while Brunson has the better team around him, Doncic will be expecting to walk away with the victory.

Luka Doncic Has Admitted That He Misses Jalen Brunson

Luka Doncic and Jalen Brunson went to the Western Conference Finals together, and even though Doncic now has Kyrie Irving as his teammate, he still misses his old pal. He admitted as much recently

“A lot,” said Luka on how much the Mavs miss Brunson. “I mean, you know amazing guy, amazing player.”

Slovenia and Team USA are in separate groups, and with a lot of superstars not participating in the FIBA World Cup, both will be gunning for a gold medal. It’ll be interesting to see who comes out on top.
