James Harden is not a man that gives many revealing interviews. Harden is a quiet operator, even though he has been one of the most highlighted stars in the league in the last few seasons.

Ever since the 2020 playoffs, Harden had negative attention for demanding a trade out of Houston, forming a superteam in Brooklyn, leaving that superteam to join Philadelphia, and so on.

However, Harden gave a very open interview to Forbes where he spoke about his playoff struggles, Kevin Durant requesting a trade after Harden was labeled a quitter for doing so, and primarily, his time with the Brooklyn Nets.

I asked Harden how he’d describe his time in Brooklyn. He hesitated. His first answer was that it was tough because “I wasn’t able to get healthy.” Then he paused.

“I don’t mean to, like, just down talk to anybody or whatever. It was just, there was no structure and even superstars, they need structure. That’s what allows us to be the best players and leaders for our respective organizations,” he said. (h/t Forbes)

Harden has borne the brunt of years of criticism, but he feels the situation in Brooklyn was out of his hand. Many could say Harden should have persevered, but given the situation, he ended up getting the Nets valuable assets by being traded instead of walking as a free agent.

Does James Harden Need A Championship In Philadelphia?

James Harden is an elite group of players that have nothing left to achieve outside of winning a championship. Philadelphia has a strong team with an MVP-level superstar in Joel Embiid, this might be Harden’s final chance at a ring. This year’s 76ers team has underachieved so far but has the ingredients to win.

Harden needs a championship to vindicate his incredible resume. As he says later in the interview, he changed the game. All he needs is a championship to prove he was a winning player all along, and not the playoff struggler many view him as.
