Jason Williams Says LaMelo Ball Reminds Him Of Himself

Point guard LaMelo Ball is one of the most talented young prospects in the game today, and he has already been selected as an All-Star and won the Rookie of the Year award. He has been lauded for his playmaking ability, and there is no doubt that Ball can put on a fantastic show every night for the fans.

Recently, NBA champion Jason Williams claimed that LaMelo Ball reminds him “a little bit” of himself in an interview with Lance Agcaoili of Inquirer.net. However, he noted that players like Ball can score 30 points every evening, adding that he would never be able to do that.

“I don’t think any of them played like I played. Maybe LaMelo Ball a little bit. But the guys are so good and they can score 30 points every night so it’s different. I would never score 30,” said Williams.

Jason Williams was definitely a pass-first player for the majority of his career, and he never averaged more than 15 PPG in his career. It is easy to see why he sees himself in LaMelo Ball, as Ball is a floor general first and foremost, while also having a flair for the spectacular when passing.

This season, LaMelo Ball averaged 23.3 PPG, 6.4 RPG, and 8.4 APG for the Charlotte Hornets. The team is in a rebuilding stage as of right now, but if Ball develops into a superstar, they could end up being contenders in the future. LaMelo Ball will be out for the rest of the season with a fractured ankle, but next year, the Hornets could end up being in the running for the play-in tournament.

Some Have Blamed LaMelo Ball For The Hornets’ Problems

Even though LaMelo Ball is clearly a talented player, the Hornets haven’t been a winning franchise during his tenure. In fact, previously, it was revealed that an NBA player stated that the Hornets are bad because “LaMelo Ball is trash”.

“This LaMelo Ball, when he’s the face of your franchise, you’re all about style and substance. You’re not about competitiveness, you’re not about toughness, you’re not about winning. LaMelo’s gotta grow up. I see nothing from him, not in year three, that shows me he cares about winning. I don’t believe that he does. You’re allowed to grow up… I talked to a player that played against Charlotte this preseason, and the player told me, ‘That team is trash because LaMelo Ball is trash.'”

It is definitely unfair to pin all of the Hornets’ issues on one player. They are still a young team and need to be given more time to develop before they start winning. However, it is also fair to expect some sort of progress year to year, and we’ll see what happens next season.
