Austin Reaves’ emergence as a key contributor for the Los Angeles Lakers after going undrafted and being of a white complexion has led to comparisons with Alex Caruso.

The former Lakers guard though doesn’t think they have a lot in common.

“There’s not a ton in common, and that’s what’s funny about it,” Caruso said, per Joe Cowley of the Chicago Sun-Times. “He’s a guy who’s basically been in the NBA his whole career, I was a guy who wasn’t drafted, went to the G-League for a year, played in three Summer Leagues to try and get on a team, and still, even then, [was] grinding my way to get minutes and carving a role out.

Their games aren’t really similar and their journeys are different too. Caruso is an excellent defender but is a bit limited on the offensive end, while Reaves is very much an offensive player.

Caruso had to spend a year in the G League and had multiple two-way contracts with the Lakers before they finally signed him to a two-year deal in 2019. Reaves, meanwhile, was signed to a standard NBA contract before he played a regular season game in his rookie season.

Austin Reaves Says There Are Only Two Similarities Between Him And Alex Caruso

There has been a lot of chatter about these two and after Reaves scored 35 points against the Orlando Magic, Lakers fans debated who would win a 1-on-1 game between them. The two will face off when the Lakers take on the Chicago Bulls twice in the span of four days, so we might get some sort of an answer to that question.

Reaves has heard about all the comparisons too and like Caruso, he doesn’t think they have much in common. He says the only similarities are that they both played on the Lakers and are white. Lakers fans would be hoping that another similarity between them doesn’t pop up in the offseason and that they sign Reaves to an extension so that he doesn’t leave as Caruso did in 2021.
