• Los Angeles Lakers owner Jeanie Buss says LeBron James will get his jersey retired by the organization
• No comments on if James will get both of his jerseys retired by the team
• James is a future Hall of Famer and broke the NBA’s all-time scoring record while donning the iconic Purple and Gold jersey
LeBron James joined the Los Angeles Lakers in 2018. It’s hard to believe that the King has already spent five seasons with the franchise. He led them to an NBA Championship in 2020.
Many have debated whether James will get his jersey retired by the Lakers or not. Owner Jeanie Buss recently confirmed that LeBron James’ jersey will one day hang in the rafters of the Crypto.com arena. Buss made the revelation in an exclusive interview with Mark Medina of ‘Sportskeeda.’
“The standard for having your jersey retired as a Laker is when a player is inducted into the Hall of Fame. I have absolutely no doubt that LeBron will make it into the Basketball Hall of Fame,” Buss told Sportskeeda. “When he does so, then we will retire his jersey. Knowing that he will make it into the Basketball Hall of Fame, he will have his Lakers jersey retired, no doubt about it.”
Upon being asked if James would get both No. 6 and No. 23 retired, Buss gave an unsatisfactory answer.
“That’s a discussion for another time,” Buss said.
James announced that he would change back to No. 23 after wearing No. 6 for the past two seasons. LeBron’s decision comes in light of honoring late NBA legend Bill Russell.
While James broke the NBA’s all-time scoring record wearing No. 6, he led the Lakers to the 2020 championship wearing No. 23. If the Lakers only decide to retire one jersey, it will, without a doubt, be his No. 23.
Should LeBron James Get A Statue Outside The Lakers Arena?
Getting a jersey retired is one thing, but getting a statue outside of an arena is truly a rare sight to see. Many have wondered if James should get a statue outside the Lakers arena when he’s done playing.
Shaquille O’Neal believes he should get one because not only he broke the all-time scoring record as a Laker, but he also won a ring with the team.
Franchise legend James Worthy gave a similar answer. Worthy says it’s doable for the Cavaliers and Lakers to make a statue of LeBron once he retires.
So far, LeBron has averaged 27.4 PPG, 8.1 RPG, and 8.0 APG in the past five seasons for the Lakers.
