Despite being a 3x All-Star, Timberwolves big man Karl-Anthony Towns is often missing in conversations about the best players in the game. Speaking on this matter on the ‘Run It Back ‘show on FanDuel TV, former NBA guard Jeff Teague gave the star forward his flowers while explaining why so many people today fail to recognize his status as one of the best bigs in the game.
“He one of the best players in the league. I think it’s because he changed his voice in his interviews. But he’s really cold, I think he’s one of the best players in the league. People thought I was crazy but his skill set, when I first met him, he was doing all the same stuff as Wembanyama. He just gets a bad rap for stuff like that off the court.”
"[Karl-Anthony Towns] gets a lot of disrespect from players, fans…why is that?" @ChandlerParsons

It’s worth noting that while Towns has been great individually, the Timberwolves haven’t been much of a threat over the years and that’s probably the biggest reason why he is so often overlooked. But this season, with Minnesota at the top of the standings, Towns is finally getting some of the credit he deserves and maybe the narrative on his career will finally start to change.
Does Towns Change His Voice For Interviews?
Back in 2022, Towns went viral for a postgame interview he gave after a playoff win over the Nuggets. In the interview, Towns can be heard deepening his voice for the cameras while trying to keep a very serious expression on his face. For whatever reason, he was trying to alter the pitch of his voice for the interview and fans blasted him for it when the video was released.

Of course, that’s just one example of Towns trying to manipulate his image. On several occasions, he’s been caught trying to make himself appear as something he’s not.
Couple these strange behaviors with a track record of losing in the NBA, and it’s easy to see why some players lack respect for Karl-Anthony Towns as a leader. But whether you love him or hate him, you cannot deny his talent and his place among the elite big men of the game.
A New Era In Minnesota
This season appears to be a breakout season for Towns and the Timberwolves. Through 17 games so far, KAT is averaging 21.2 points, 9 rebounds, and 2.9 assists per game on 49% shooting from the field. He’s also shooting 39% from three this season in 5.3 attempts per game. While not the Timberwolves’ best player, Towns provides crucial floor-spacing in the frontcourt, next to Defensive Player of The Year candidate Rudy Gobert.
The only thing better than Towns’ play so far has been the Timberwolves’ performance as a team. After years of irrelevancy in the NBA, the Timberwolves have emerged as the best team in the West this season with a 13-4 record through the first 17 games. And while there’s still a long way to go before the postseason, the combined talents of Towns, Gobert, and Anthony Edwards are proving to be right up there with the best of them and there’s no reason to think that they aren’t a threat to make a run this season.
