Draymond Green recently appeared on the Jimmy Kimmel show to discuss his 17-game suspension from the NBA this season. During the interview, Kimmel humorously roasted Green, referencing one of his more infamous on-court incidents.
Draymond Green: “It felt like way more. So then they made you go, which is somewhat extraordinary, to some kind of, what do they call it, mandatory counseling? Well, it was kind of mandatory, kind of not. There is mandatory and there is non-mandatory. Well, let’s face it, Jim.”
“We have HIPAA laws in America, so you can’t make me go, but I had to go. Well, it’s very interesting because I talked to my therapist and I’m like, hey, like I can’t get suspended. I really got to get a grip on this.”
“And he’s like, all right, great. So what are you, what, what’s your, like, what’s your plan? If you’ve ever been in therapy, like you’re kind of just talking through your own stuff. And he’s like, what’s your plan? And I’m like, well, I’m just not going to talk to referees at all.”
“He’s like, well, that’s gonna be. Like, I mean, that’s like, that’s awful. And so then I’m like, well, maybe I can find someone on our sideline to explode on if I need to kind of just get my words out. It’s like, yeah, well, the camera’s gonna turn to you and the whole world gonna think you’re losing your mind.”
“So it’s a very interesting thing because I am a player that like, I walk the line, you know, like I’m on the toe that line and see how hot it is if I dip my toe in.”
Jimmy Kimmel: “Yeah, sometimes you’re dipping your toe into another man’s testicles in a hard way.” (3:15)
Green talked about how challenging it was to manage his emotions and avoid further suspensions. He shared that the league had mandated counseling sessions for him, despite some flexibility due to HIPAA laws. Green revealed his discussions with his therapist about strategies to prevent outbursts, especially towards referees.
Initially, Green considered not talking to referees at all to avoid conflicts, but his therapist pointed out that this approach might be unrealistic. Green then thought about venting his frustrations on the sidelines instead, but realized this would likely draw negative attention given the constant media scrutiny.
Green reflected on his style of play, acknowledging that he often pushes boundaries to see how far he can go without crossing the line. He likened this to “walking the line” and testing limits, a metaphorical “dipping his toe” to gauge how hot the situation might get.
Kimmel, known for his quick wit, used this moment to deliver a memorable roast. He humorously compared Green’s habit of testing boundaries to some of his more notorious on-court incidents, specifically alluding to an infamous altercation involving another player’s groin.
This playful jab highlighted Green’s tendency to find himself in controversial situations and turned a serious discussion about discipline and self-control into a moment of lightheartedness.
Despite the roast, Green took it all in good humor, laughing along with Kimmel and the audience. The exchange showcased the blend of intensity and humor that characterizes Green’s public persona, making for an entertaining and insightful segment on the late-night show.
The interaction underscored Green’s awareness of his reputation and his willingness to discuss and laugh about it openly, even when it comes to some of his more controversial moments on the basketball court.
