Joel Embiid is an MVP candidate again this season, vying for the NBA’s scoring title while playing lockdown defense and leading his team to wins. Embiid’s ability has never been questioned by anyone that has watched him play, but the issues regarding the Philadelphia 76ers’ big man arise from a different place. It’s always hard to tell how long Joel Embiid will remain healthy for.
Joel Embiid has missed just 12 games for the Sixers this season, and not all of them have even been through injury. His health seems to be holding up well to the naked eye. But when he recently provided an update, it wasn’t a good one. Embiid suggested that he might not play in the All-Star Game because he’s been playing through hurt for 3 weeks. And Keith Pompey of the Philadelphia Inquirer reported that the issue had been going on for longer.
“His left foot has bothered him the most. He played in the last 11 games before the break despite being listed as questionable with the soreness. Embiid hasn’t been healthy for a month.”
In the last month, Joel Embiid has averaged over 32 points per game to go along with nearly 11 rebounds, the man can perform at a high level even without complete health. But it is a concern for the Sixers as the season goes on, with the extent of his potential injuries possibly being much greater than has been spoken about.
Joel Embiid’s Various Medical Issues This Season Have Been Revealed
The report from Keith Pompey suggests that various issues have been going on with Embiid for most of the season. His health, often a question mark, has been less than perfect again, with the extent of it seeming a little worrisome.
“Embiid has been dealing with foot problems all season. His workouts in the offseason and during training camp were hampered by plantar fasciitis. That led to him being out of shape at the beginning of the season.
“Then Embiid missed a combined eight games because of his left foot being sprained and general soreness unrelated to the plantar fasciitis. He’s also missed several other games with the flu, left knee effusion, and right knee injury recovery.”
Philadelphia 76ers have high hopes this season, with a legitimate co-star alongside Embiid and a roster that is deep enough to go against anyone in the NBA. But they need Joel to be healthy if they want to have any chance, meaning that the next few months might see him be played a little more carefully than he has been so far.
