Speaking with reporters this weekend, 76ers star Joel Embiid opened up on his opinion of Anthony Edwards. According to the reigning MVP, Edwards is one of his favorite players in the game
“Anthony Edwards is one of my top-three favorite players in the league,” said Embiid. “Dude is so nice, I saw it last night, I was like, ‘Well, if he can do it, why can’t I do it too?’ I’m a big fan of his. I love him, I love his game.”
Joel tried to replicate Edwards’ infamous self-alley oop that recently caught the internet by storm. While his attempt was much less smooth, it speaks volumes about how Embiid, and the rest of the league, view Edwards. After all, if the league’s reigning MVP has something nice to say about you, then there’s no denying that you’re a cut above the average player. Clearly for Edwards, his game has a rare type of potential that could elevate him to become one of the best players in the world.
Anthony Edwards Is Taking Over
Drafted first in the 2020 NBA draft, Anthony Edwards was projected to be a star from day one. But nobody saw just how good he would become. In three seasons in the NBA, Edwards is averaging 22.5 points, 5.1 rebounds, and 3.0 assists per game on 44% shooting. At 6’4″ with a strong frame and freakish athleticism, Ant is impossible to guard and he’s quick at getting to his sports on the court. This season., however, has been Edwards at his absolute best. Through 38 games, he’s averaging a career-high 26.1 points, 5.4 rebounds, and 5.0 assists per game on 46.5% shooting.
As for what’s next with Edwards, he’s got nothing left to prove in terms of his talent. But without any playoff victories to show for his NBA tenure, he’s going to have to start winning in April, May, and June before anyone considers him in the same tier as the top superstars. But with the Timberwolves sitting at the top of the West standings, this could be the year that he carries them to a deep playoff run.
Are Timberwolves Title Contenders?
As winners of four straight games, the Wolves have a lock on the West’s top seed. At 30-11, including 17-2 at home, the Timberwolves are proving to be a legitimate threat this season. Obviously, Edwards is a major part of the prosperity as his play has given the Timberwolves a bonafide number-one guy. But even outside of Edwards, the Wolves are rich with talent and depth. In the frontcourt, Rudy Gobert and Karl-Anthony Towns are having career-years and their combined dominance has made the Wolves tough to beat all season long.
In February, the Timberwolves are not expected to be aggressive on the trade front but they could make a move if the right opportunity arises. For now, Minnesota has to be patient and treat this season as a chance to see what they’ve really got. By the looks of it right now, this team could easily compete for a title and that’s a rare thing for the Timberwolves franchise.
