There is always a conversation among NBA fans about the worst contracts in the league, with quite a few examples of injuries and poor performances, making a player’s deal very difficult for the team to deal with. And while players like Russell Westbrook and James Harden have had questions asked about the sizes of their deals, John Wall’s contract has arguably been the worst in recent seasons.
This isn’t a knock on Wall. He earned that contract with his play, but injuries have not been kind to the point guard. There have been some crazy stats through this time, like the fact that Wall has played fewer games than Dirk Nowitzki in the last five years, even though the German retired in 2019.
And what makes it even worse is the fact that Wall is among the highest earners in the NBA, and the last season of his deal, 2022-23 is a player option. And as reported by Jake Fischer of Bleacher Report, Wall is expected to pick up that option which is worth $47.4 million for next season, giving the Houston Rockets a decision to make:
“B/R’s Jake Fischer reported John Wall is expected to pick up his $47.4 million player option for next season.”
Wall has played just 40 games since he signed his supermax, and just 72 games since the beginning of the 2018-19 season. The Houston Rockets decided to not play him in the latter half of this season, so it’s not entirely Wall’s fault, and it’s likely that he will get bought out by the team after picking up his option.
His future is an uncertain one, even though Wall is just 31 and can become an excellent piece for someone again. It’s unlikely that anyone will give Wall another big contract though, and he has some work ahead of him to rehabilitate his career.
