The fortunes of the Dallas Mavericks changed when the franchise traded for Luka Doncci on the NBA Draft Night in 2018. Ever since that night, Doncic has only gotten better with each season he has spent in the league.
So much so that Luka Doncic is now one of the top players in the league in his position and is even a candidate to win the regular season MVP award. But let’s not focus on that for a change.
How about we talk about a player who was Luka Doncic even before Luka himself? Well, former NBA player Kenny Smith recently revealed the name of Detlef Schrempf, a player who had a skill set similar to what fans have gotten accustomed to seeing Doncic flaunt in the league.
“Your dad was a bad man. I know – we on them scouting reports. But Detlef, you gotta guard him here, you gotta guard him here. That’s Luka before Luka. He would be Luka today.”
Smith had nothing but praise for Detlef, but the former German-American player said he wouldn’t shoot as much as Luka does even if he played in this era.
Speaking of Detlef’s career in the NBA, he averaged 13.9 PPG, 6,2 RPG, and 3.4 APG while shooting 49.1% from the field and 38.3% from deep. In his best season in the league, Detlef shot a phenomenal 51.4% from the 3-point line. He also averaged 19.2 PPG in that season.
Luka Doncic Is A Superstar In The NBA
In the 2022-23 NBA season, Luka Doncic has carried the Dallas Mavericks on his back throughout the regular season. But even before the season began, many expected Doncic to win the first MVP award of his NBA season. Considering Luka is an international figure, winning an MVP award in the NBA will get him more respect from the fans.
But even without it, Doncic himself has claimed that the level of respect which international players get in today’s NBA is higher than before. Whether Doncic wins the MVP award will be revealed in the upcoming months. After all, there are less than 25 games left in the regular season.
