It wasn’t long after their second-round defeat against the Nuggets that new Suns owner Mat Ishbia began to clean house. First up on the docket was Monty Williams, who was promptly fired and then replaced by the defensive-minded Frank Vogel. Of course, that was just a small taste of the changes to come.

Earlier this week, the Suns traded for Bradley Beal to add him to a lineup with Kevin Durant and Devin Booker. Beal himself was the one who ultimately decided to settle in Phoenix, but it wasn’t without some convincing from Durant, who reportedly recruited him to the franchise.

“Last week Bradley Beal and the Wizards worked on finding him a trade because the Wizards are clearly moving towards a rebuild. They started working together on finding him a home,” said The Athletic’s Shams Charania. “The Phoenix Suns aggressively went after Bradley Beal. From James Jones to Frank Vogel to Mat Ishbia to Josh Bartelstein their CEO and even some players — I’m told even Kevin Durant and Devin Booker recruited Bradley Beal. There were conversations with both Beal and his wife Kamiah. This team is all-in on a championship.”

Durant has now been on five different superteams over the course of his career, and it seems he played a lead role in creating each one. In this case, with the Suns, they were able to pick up an All-Star for a pretty cheap price, but it remains to be seen if they can all win together, given the questionable fit.

Can The New-Look Suns Win A Championship?

On paper, the Suns look pretty good with all their top-heavy talent. With a starting group that includes Booker, Durant, Ayton, and now Bradley Beal, they will be hard to beat.

“Bradley Beal, KD, and D Book? Three of the most prolific scorers in the game today on one team,” said Kendrick Perkins. “James Jones is out here selling used cars for Rolls-Royce because that’s exactly what just happened. The fact that he was able to keep Deandre Ayton was huge.”

Despite all the star power, there are still reasons to doubt the Suns, especially when it comes to depth, chemistry, and defensive identity. If the Suns really want to maximize their title chances, they can’t stop rolling now. They need to keep making moves to ensure they have a complete roster.
