Kevin Durant picked Stephen Curry to beat Sabrina Ionescu with the two set to face off in a three-point contest during All-Star weekend on February 17. Curry was later asked who he believed Durant would have picked, and he thought it would be Ionescu, as he wildly called his former teammate an instigator.

“Knowing him, he’s an instigator. I’m sure he picked her,” Curry said.

(starts at 1:17 mark):

When Durant found out that Curry called him an instigator, he hilariously changed his pick and is now backing Ionescu to come out on top.

While Durant does have a reputation for being an instigator, he has always shown Curry a lot of respect in these kinds of conversations. Last season, Durant picked Curry to beat his teammate Yuta Watanabe in a three-point contest. That would have been the perfect moment for him to play instigator, but he gave Curry the respect he deserves.

As for this contest between Curry and Ionescu, I would pick the former to come out on top. The 35-year-old is quite simply the greatest shooter we have ever seen and I would back Curry against anybody in basketball history.

Were Ionescu facing anyone else, I would have given her a great chance of winning. The 26-year-old led the WNBA in made threes last season with 128 and shot 44.8% from beyond the arc too. She also broke the NBA and WNBA record for most points in a three-point shooting contest by earning 37 points last year.

The previous record had been held by Curry and Tyrese Haliburton, with both of them having had 31-point outings. It was after that record-breaking performance, that Curry challenged her to a shooting contest, and Ionescu readily agreed. The New York Liberty star is undoubtedly a special talent, but Curry for me is still a level above her and everybody else.

Now, if Ionescu somehow manages to get to 37 again, she would win, but I don’t think she or anyone else is going to be able to hit that total for a very long time. That was just a magical night, and she might have just set an unbeatable record with that display.

Stephen Curry Says The Sky Is The Limit For Sabrina Ionescu

Curry and Ionescu have become good friends over the years, with the Warriors star even serving as a mentor to her. After the Golden State Warriors beat the Brooklyn Nets on Monday night, the two-time MVP spoke glowingly of the WNBA star.

“She’s from Walnut Creek and Bay area hometown kid that’s kind of paved her own way as an icon in women’s basketball and basketball, in general,” Curry said. “What she did at Oregon. How she’s starting to pave her way as WNBA All-Star… Sky is the limit for her and what she can do on the court, in terms of her impact in the game but also off the court as well. It’s been fun to watch her journey and the stage that we’ll be on in Indiana will be fun.”

It should be a lot of fun, and at the end of the day, basketball will be the real winner on that night. It is in many ways, a groundbreaking moment of sorts, and it will be interesting to see if it paves the way for more NBA vs. WNBA contests in the future.
