Kevin Durant continues to miss Team USA practices due to a calf strain, raising concerns among fans and analysts about his availability for upcoming games. However, head coach Steve Kerr remains unconcerned, maintaining a calm and optimistic outlook regarding Durant’s recovery, according to senior ESPN writer Brian Windhorst.

“I know there’s still a couple of weeks before we have to make a decision roster-wise. So we’re just taking it day by day. It’s not something we’ve even discussed at this point because we feel good that Durant is going to be ok.”

Team USA has relocated to Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, where they are preparing for a friendly match against Australia on Monday. Durant, who has been sidelined with the injury, is unlikely to participate. Despite the setback, Kerr downplayed any immediate worry.

Durant’s absence comes at a critical time as the team gears up for the Olympics. However, the coaching staff has been prepared for such scenarios. Weeks ago, Team USA had a contingency plan for Kawhi Leonard, who was recovering from a knee injury.

Derrick White was identified as Leonard’s replacement, and this move was executed on Wednesday, with White joining the roster as the team concluded its training camp in Las Vegas.

Although the team has not publicly discussed a backup plan for Durant, Kerr expressed confidence in Durant’s recovery. Durant himself has expressed hope to recover in time to participate in the warmup games in the Middle East, including a crucial match against Serbia, which marks the opening of Team USA’s Olympic play in France later this month.

As Team USA continues its preparations, Derrick White is set to join the team in Abu Dhabi, having flown in on Saturday. He is expected to practice with the team for the first time on Sunday.

Despite the uncertainties surrounding Durant’s injury, Kerr’s composed approach and the team’s strategic preparations reflect a sense of readiness and adaptability as they aim for Olympic success.

Jaylen Brown Should Be Given The Spot If Kevin Durant Misses Out

If Kevin Durant is not ready to go by July 28th, Jaylen Brown should be the obvious replacement. With Durant’s availability in doubt due to a calf strain, Team USA is likely to announce a replacement well before that date to ensure the team is fully prepared for the Olympics.

Jaylen Brown, who was notably unimpressed when Derrick White was picked over him to replace Kawhi Leonard, has made his case both on the court and through social media. Brown expressed his dissatisfaction with the selection process and took a cheeky dig at his teammates, highlighting his desire and readiness to step up.

Brown’s recent achievements make him a prime candidate to fill Durant’s shoes. Fresh off winning his first championship and earning Finals MVP honors, Brown has proven he can perform at the highest level. His spectacular form during the playoffs showcased his scoring ability, defensive prowess, and leadership—qualities that would greatly benefit Team USA.

Given Durant’s potential absence, Team USA will need forwards who can both score and defend effectively. Brown fits this role perfectly. His versatility allows him to guard multiple positions, and his offensive game has evolved to make him a reliable scorer from anywhere on the court. Additionally, his championship experience brings a winning mentality to the squad, something invaluable in high-pressure international competitions.

Brown’s inclusion would also address the chemistry and morale within the team. His dissatisfaction with previous selections could be mitigated by giving him the opportunity he feels he deserves, potentially fostering a more united and motivated team environment.

If Kevin Durant cannot participate, Jaylen Brown should be the clear choice to replace him. His recent performance, versatility, and championship experience make him an ideal candidate to step up and help lead Team USA to success in the Olympics.
