- Zion Williamson has been criticized for failing to perform according to expectations
- Kevin Garnett says that the issue isn’t with his physicality or his fitness
- Kevin Garnett went on to say Zion Williamson’s problems are to do with his mental state and that he doesn’t feel like himself
Zion Williamson is 23 years old and entering his 5th NBA season, but has only played in 114 games. His physicality and conditioning have been called into question, but Kevin Garnett thinks there is more to it than that. Speaking with Paul Pierce, Garnett explained why he thinks Zion’s issues have to do with his mental state.
“I don’t think it’s about physicality with dude, I think it’s between his ears,” Garnett said. “You go out, do a 360 between the legs, and then go walk back into the locker room, that blew everybody.
“You said it was a hamstring issue, windmill that motherf***er, I’m like damn, ‘You good enough to play something or give us something.’ He don’t feel like he’s Zion. That was more mental to me or at least, the mental flags went up.”

If Zion’s mind is right everything else follows. He’ll be in the talks with the best in the League, his team will cook… but that’s a BIG if 💯 pic.twitter.com/ZGCNZLdRiC

Zion Williamson had some serious highlights during the 29 games he played for the New Orleans Pelicans last season, but an injury forced him to sit out the rest of the season. Zion Williamson was averaging 26.0 points, 7.0 rebounds, and 4.6 assists per game for the Pelicans before his injury. What Kevin Garnett says may be true, it’s unlikely that a young player misses this many games just due to physical issues.
Zion Williamson’s NBA Career Is In An Extremely Precarious Position
For any NBA player to make two All-Star appearances by the age of 23, they have to be an incredibly special talent. Zion Williamson is that, but his off-court issues mean his career is at a crossroads. There are rumors that the Pelicans could move on from him, and while he’s likely to play another season, those rumors are a bad sign for Zion.
All the drama with Moriah Mills this offseason hasn’t helped his case, what matters more than anything is that he can stay on the court for the entirety of next season. If he can do that and continue to post insane averages, then he could get his career back on the amazing track it was before. Otherwise, he might end up spiraling and becoming a bust.
