In a pivotal moment that shaped the trajectory of his career, Larry Nance Jr. shared a revealing anecdote about the profound impact Kobe Bryant had on him during his early days in the NBA. Recounting the experience on Fanduel TV, Nance disclosed the first advice he received from the basketball legend.

“It was funny like we were playing the Hawks and you know like I’m an athletic dude. I came in an athletic dude and so like I always thought like I knew I was athletic but it’s the NBA.”

“These guys are bigger, faster, stronger, more athletic. So I tried to like finish around Al Horford one time and missed, finish around Paul Millsap one time and missed.”

“And we came to the timeout, he just grabbed my jersey and was like aye MF, I’ve seen you at practice. Dunk everything. I don’t care who’s there, they can’t touch you. Dunk everything.”

“So the very next possession, I caught in the post, Rip Middle and just, right on top of them both. And it just, like that just spurred my career forward.”

Playing against the Atlanta Hawks, Nance, known for his athleticism, found himself hesitating after missing attempts against formidable opponents like Al Horford and Paul Millsap. Despite his evident physical prowess, Nance was grappling with the transition to the NBA, where the competition was more robust.

It was during a timeout that Kobe Bryant, recognizing Nance’s potential, delivered a straightforward yet powerful message. Grabbing Nance’s jersey, Bryant emphatically conveyed, “Dunk everything. I don’t care who’s there, they can’t touch you.” This directive from the basketball icon served as a catalyst for Nance’s confidence and assertiveness on the court.

Embracing Bryant’s advice, Nance took the very next possession to heart. Positioned in the post, he executed a forceful dunk over his opponents, showcasing the fearlessness instilled by Bryant’s words. This transformative moment not only boosted Nance’s self-assurance but also propelled his career forward.

The impact of Kobe Bryant’s mentorship went beyond the physical act of dunking; it resonated as a symbol of belief and empowerment. Nance’s recollection underscores the profound influence that a few words of encouragement from a basketball legend can have on a player’s mindset, instilling the confidence to unleash their full potential on the court.
