Eight of the last 12 seasons in the NBA have finished with either LeBron James or Stephen Curry hoisting the Larry O’Brien trophy. The two men have really been the dominant forces in the league and have established themselves as two of the greatest players ever.
An NBA executive though, thinks the days of LeBron or Curry carrying their teams to championships are over.
“I think things are cyclical,” an Eastern Conference executive told ESPN. “The reality is LeBron is older, so the guy that’s driven that for the prior 15 years isn’t in the position where he alone can will himself to championships anymore. Same with Steph.”
To be fair to Curry, it was only last year that he carried the Golden State Warriors to a title, so to say he can no longer do it, might be a bit unfair. It might well be the case for LeBron though and I am not being critical of him when I say that.
He is going to be entering his 21st season in the league in 2023-24 and it is unrealistic to expect anyone at that stage to carry a team. The fact that some might believe he can do it speaks to his greatness, as no one else has played this well this deep into their career.
Kendrick Perkins Also Believes LeBron James Can’t Lead The Lakers To A Title Next Season
Kendrick Perkins was teammates with LeBron on the Cleveland Cavaliers and he holds him in very high regard. When he was asked if James could lead the Los Angeles Lakers to a title next season though, Perkins stated he doesn’t. He felt it would be unfair to have those kinds of expectations on someone who is going to be 39 years old later this year.
He believes the onus should be on Anthony Davis to lead the Lakers and that is how it should be. LeBron, who averaged 28.9 PPG, 8.3 RPG, 6.8 APG, 0.9 SPG, and 0.6 BPG last season, will keep playing at a pretty high level for a couple of years but the only way the Lakers would win championships in that time would be if Davis elevates his game and becomes the undisputed best player on the team.
