The rise of sports agent Rich Paul in the last decade has been incredible to watch. Most people think Paul has reached the heights he has because LeBron James opened up a lot of doors for him. James, however, is disappointed to hear people say that because of everything Paul has achieved on his own.

“It’s disappointing to hear that. And I don’t give people opportunity much and he took way beyond than what he even imagined.”

James gave Paul and his childhood friends Maverick Carter and Randy Mims a whole lot of opportunities to find their way in the world. In a society where friends often just expect their superstar athlete friends to take care of their expenses, James empowered his inner circle to become millionaires in their own right.

Paul has built one of the most powerful sports agencies in the world, one whose power has far exceeded just the importance of LeBron. Paul has superstar clients in every sport and has a thriving business due to his hard work, not just because he has been friends with LeBron.

Rich Paul Sold Crack And Marijuana To Make Ends Meet

Even though Paul always had a business mind, he wasn’t selling the antique jerseys that helped him become friends with LeBron from the get-go. Unfortunately, Paul had to sell drugs to support himself after the death of his father. With his mother already addicted to drugs, it seemed that street life was all that was left for Paul while he was still a teenager.

Rich Paul: “The absence of my dad allowed me to—to take that step because I woulda never done that had he been around. I had too much respect for him. And it’s not somethin’ that I would sit here and– and glorify.”

Bill Whitaker: “It almost sounds like you were a full-time hustler.”

Rich Paul: “Oh yeah. But Jeff Bezos is a hustler. Think he’s not? Phil Knight was the ultimate hustler. The difference is they could go with their plan and their business idea and get someone to believe in them. It didn’t matter what idea I had. There’s no pathway to get there.”

Paul also took part in dice games in the neighborhood park, working as a hustler who could earn as much as $5,000 from just playing dice. Now, Paul brokers billions of dollars worth of NBA contracts for his clients.

Rich Paul Is Incredibly Loyal To LeBron James

Even though Paul has built his career on his own, it wouldn’t have been possible without LeBron. Paul learned everything he knew about being an agent from LeBron’s old agent Leon Rose, under whom Paul had worked when LeBron moved to Miami from Cleveland.

Paul recently came out with very strong statements supporting James’ argument as the greatest player in NBA history, comments that created controversy amongst many NBA reporters.

“I just think LeBron’s antlers are in platinum and Michael Jordan’s may be in gold. Why? Because he had to be compared to Mike. Who did Mike have to be compared to?”

Paul has also made proclamations that James is treated differently than other stars in the NBA, once directly naming Stephen Curry and saying the media would respect the 2020 Orlando bubble title the Lakers won if it was the Warriors that walked away with a win.
