Vince Carter is considered the greatest dunker in NBA history. The former Carolina Tar Heels star was able to make his mark on the NBA thanks to his incredible athleticism and ferocious dunking ability. So much so, that even LeBron James believed that a pair of Carter’s shoes would make him jump higher.

In a conversation with Chris Bosh and rap superstar Drake, LeBron James spoke about the influence Vince Carter had on the game and on the shoe culture in the NBA. He noted that Vince Carter’s incredible dunks made kids believe that they could jump higher and dunk like Carter.

“Vince had kids actually believing that they can jump if they put on a pair of Nike Shox. I had a pair… Vince really had you believing that the Shox technology in those shoes would make you jump like that. It’s not a lot of guys (that can make you believe). Air, he can make you believe. You got Vince with Shox, you got cross-trainers with Bo. And you got a little something with me…”

Vince Carter was one of the most popular players during his time in the NBA, and this was primarily because of his dunking ability. Carter pretty much became a household name because of his dunking skills and made every game he played must-watch for fans of the NBA.

Vince Carter Revolutionized Dunking In The NBA

Vince Carter’s popularity in the NBA also helped him massively when it came to shoe deals. Carter was initially signed to Puma, but a legal dispute eventually led to Carter signing with Nike. In fact, Carter used half of his $30 million contract to pay Puma for the damages from their legal battle.

Because of his popularity among fans in the NBA, Carter became one of the faces of Nike in the NBA during the early 2000s, along with LeBron James and Kobe Bryant. While Carter’s career declined in the latter half of the decade, there is no denying how incredibly popular he was during his peak.

Carter will always be remembered, recognized, and credited with revolutionizing the NBA Dunk Contest. Carter’s 2000 Dunk Contest performance set the bar so high that few players have been able to come close to it since.
