LeBron James is a student of the game before one of the greatest players of the game. Almost all greats study the little things about the game incessantly, with their attention to detail often helping them edge their opponents.

James shared a clip of former NBA Champion Rasheed Wallace teaching his players the right way to play the smart game on the court and praised what Wallace had to say.

Wallace said, “You get that motherf***er in the mid-range, use your pivot foot, you just worked on it. You give me baseline, I am going baseline, no fancy sh*t. You give me middle, I am going middle. Pull-up or all the way to the rim. Don’t do this sh*t and step back out and you trying to cross, in and out, nothing. Efficiency. That’s what the NBA is about. How fast can I get from here to this basket in one dribble. You do that sh*t when you become a star on your team. You trying to stay with a job, not get a job, stay with a job. F*ck that funny sh*t.”

Coaching is often overlooked at the NBA level but is absolutely crucial for players coming through the school or college system. Wallace proved in that clip that it’s all about habits that you choose to internalize.

Bradley Beal had a similar thing to say in the summer, letting his AAU team know that most of them won’t be stars in the NBA and need to perfect their fundamentals to even have the career of a role player.

LeBron James: The Coach

Even though LeBron will never enter the NBA as an assistant coach or even a head coach, there’s no doubting the coaching instincts he has had for years now. Players refer to him as an on-court coach that directs traffic at an elite level while playing the game, like a point guard.

He has also coached his son Bronny into becoming a 5-star recruit heralded for his gritty play, strong defense, and shooting ability, the most basic attributes required to be a successful NBA player nowadays. We have seen James pick up the clipboard on the Lakers’ bench various times this season. It’ll be interesting to see if he ever decides to use his basketball IQ to coach a team for an entire season.
