Magic Johnson’s recent tweet reminisces about his time playing in Sweden and sheds light on the circumstances surrounding his involvement with Borås Basket, renamed Magic M7 Borås in his honor. Johnson’s candid reflection reveals the behind-the-scenes negotiations and his genuine enthusiasm for the opportunity presented to him.

“What a magical throwback! Watching this video brings back so many memories, let me share the real Magic M7 story – The team owner reached out to me to see if I had any interest in doing a marketing deal.”

“They offered me a percentage of the team with cash and named it after me, but I was never the majority owner. I was excited about the opportunity and even agreed to play in 5 games, all sold out, to help the team drive revenue! I had so much fun! Shout out to all the fans in Sweden who showed up to support and watch the Magic man play!”

In his tweet, Johnson acknowledges the team owner’s initiative to initiate a marketing deal, which included offering Johnson a stake in the team, along with financial compensation, and the prestigious honor of having the team named after him. Despite not holding majority ownership, Johnson expresses excitement about the prospect and eagerly agrees to play in five games to help boost the team’s revenue.

Magic Johnson’s brief stint playing basketball in Sweden during the 1999-2000 season remains a captivating chapter in his illustrious career. Johnson’s venture into the Swedish league with Boras Basket rebranded as Magic M7 Boras in his honor, offered a unique and memorable experience both for him and basketball fans worldwide.

The idea stemmed from a marketing deal proposed by the team’s owner, who offered Johnson a percentage of the team along with cash incentives and the opportunity to have the team named after him. While Johnson wasn’t the majority owner, he eagerly embraced the opportunity, recognizing its potential for mutual benefit.

During his time with Magic M7 Borås, Johnson played in five games, leaving an indelible mark on the court. His remarkable performance included scoring 30 points in a single game and orchestrating 11 assists within the first 2.5 minutes of another, showcasing his enduring skills and charisma on the hardwood.

Despite Johnson’s contributions and the initial excitement surrounding his involvement, the project ultimately faced financial turmoil and bankruptcy due to preexisting financial issues. The team’s dissolution marked the end of Johnson’s short five-game venture in Sweden, but it underscored the challenges inherent in merging basketball with business ventures.

Nevertheless, Johnson’s time in Sweden was cherished by fans who witnessed the “Magic man” in action, demonstrating his enduring appeal and impact on the global basketball community. His willingness to support the team and engage with fans exemplified his dedication to the sport and his enduring legacy beyond the NBA.

Following his departure from Boras, Johnson briefly extended his basketball journey by playing two games for The Great Danes in Denmark, further emphasizing his passion for the game and his willingness to explore new horizons even in the twilight of his career.

While his Swedish odyssey may have been short-lived, it symbolizes Johnson’s unwavering commitment to basketball and his willingness to embrace new challenges and opportunities, leaving an indelible mark on the sport’s history and inspiring future generations of players and fans alike.
