Ja Morant has become a famous name in the NBA world in recent days, and not precisely for the best reasons. The Memphis Grizzlies point guard is really great on the court, but his behavior outside the arena has gotten him into trouble in recent times.
Last week, he and his entourage were accused of threatening Indiana Pacers staffers, even pointing at them with guns. This situation raised many eyebrows around the league, and if you take into consideration that he once threatened one fan with a serious sentence, Ja’s persona is getting a lot of criticism.
Shannon Sharpe, who went at it with Ja’s father during a recent Los Angeles Lakers-Memphis Grizzlies game, criticized Ja for his behavior, calling him out for trying to look tough when he’s just a basketball player.
Matt Barnes Gives Serious Advice To Ja Morant
Now, Matt Barnes and Stephen Jackson gave serious advice to Morant, telling him to take his career more seriously and stop wasting time with people that won’t bring anything good to his life. During a recent participation in What’s Burnin’, Rachel Nichols asked Barnes and Jackson what they would say to Ja to make him think straight (28:05 mark).
First, Jackson told him to be careful about what type of people he’s surrounded by.
“I’d tell him to distance himself from anybody who doesn’t have his same vision or the same purpose. The same people don’t feel the same way about him losing everything. You have to care about these things because I care about them. You have to care about it because you don’t want me to lose everything I worked for, right?”
“I think for Ja, he has to get to a point where he got to understand who he is. I’ve been in situations where I started making money and I felt like money could fix everything and that’s not realistic. You have to make the right decisions for yourself because everybody around you is not.”
Then, Barnes tried to set some boundaries for Ja, who seems to be getting used to doing things and getting away with them.
“So you just have to understand. We can’t tell him who he can and can’t hang out with. You know you want to have a tight circle that have your best interests at heart, but at the end of the day, some people are your people. Sometimes it’ll get to the point where you’ll realize you got to let somebody go, ’cause a lot of times you outgrow people, but they hang on somehow some way. He just has to understand that he’s going to continue to elevate and certain friends are meant for certain levels and it continues to get smaller and tighter and you’re gonna bring some with you, you just can’t bring them all with you. I hope he understands what’s at risk right now. Some sh*t you can’t do, and me and Jack have both some sh*t you just can’t do.”
These two have been involved in controversy too, so if there’s somebody Ja should listen to, that’s Matt Barnes and Stephen Jackson. They have lived more and bigger things, and now with their experience and maturity, these two want to help Morant and anybody who needs to hear these words.
Morant claimed that the Memphis Grizzlies are the most hated team in the NBA, and he wants to see that change, but their attitude does not help their case.
