Michael Jordan had a terrific aura around him during his playing days. The Chicago Bulls legend instilled fear into his opponents more often than not.

But was there anything that even Jordan was afraid of? Well, the answer is swimming. ‘The Jordan Rules’ author Sam Smith revealed Michael Jordan once mentioned to him his fear of swimming due to a tragic reason.

“I remember once talking to him about things he feared, figuring he’d mention death or serious injury,” Smith wrote on NBA.com. “He mentioned swimming since he said he couldn’t and feared the water as he’d once seen a friend drown.”

Swimming is not everyone’s cup of tea. Moreover, for someone like Jordan, who saw a friend drown, it’s even more difficult to put his feet in a pool. Sam Smith didn’t mention the name of His Airness’ friend in the report, though.

Does Michael Jordan Have Any Other Fears?

Michael Jordan is regarded as the greatest basketball player of all time. Evidently, his popularity had no boundaries, and he was a global icon.

Jordan spent years cultivating that impressive image, but it would have taken only a momentarily lapse to destroy it. MJ revealed putting a stain on his image was one of his biggest fears in a 1989 interview.

“It’s always something I have done. I have robbed a bank. Or I have done cocaine. I have succumbed to the pressures of drugs. I felt the pressure to drink. These are all nightmares. They’re nightmares of something terrible happening to me that would destroy a lot of people’s dreams or conceptions of me—that’s the biggest nightmare I live every day.

“What if I make a mistake? How might that be viewed? Everybody feels it’s easy to be Michael Jordan with all the good things happening to me, but the things that most scare me are the bad things—the things that would tear down Michael Jordan’s image. That’s the biggest fear I face.”

For what it’s worth, Michael Jordan didn’t let down his fans throughout his career. He maintained his phenomenal image and did nothing drastic to destroy it. It’s no surprise that even in 2023, Jordan is an idol and a role model for many young athletes.
